NMI to organize exhibition, international conference in Leh

LEH, Dec13: As a follow up of the Chief Executive Councilor, Leh’s meeting with the National Museum Institute (NMI), New Delhi in November regarding setting up of a Museum, holding of a grand exhibition on Ladakh and organizing an International Conference at Leh next year in which Ladakh’s distinctive values can be presented in totality, a meeting of local experts from the fraternity of art and culture was held here today.
The meeting was chaired by the Chief Executive Councilor, Rigzin Spalbar and among others attended by Dr. Manvi Seth, the HOD, Department of Museology, National Museum Institute, New Delhi, Councilor Lobzang Nyantak, Tsewang Rigzin, Tsering Sonam, Sonam Dorjey, Addl. DC, Tsering Morup, scholars, intellectuals and cultural experts of Ladakh.
Apart from the preliminary preparations of these proposed events in terms of framing committees and selection of venues, the meeting also held a detail discussion on the ways and means of preservation of intangible cultural forms of Ladakh which has greater threat of extinction.
In the context of setting up of the Museum in Leh, CEC urged the need for showcasing all intangible heritage with relate to ancient lifestyle of Ladakh such as costumes, tools, musical instruments, utensils, ornaments etc in the Museum and adding that Monasteries are itself a living Museum of religious arts and artefacts. Mr. Spalbar sought concept papers from the experts, so that the Museum can make a rich store house of Ladakh in real sense. The CEC also sought technical supports from the National Museum Institute to the Monasteries of Ladakh about the terms of displaying the religious and ritual objects in their Museum.
Expressing serious concern about the steady fading out of the traditions of folk songs, folk music, folk lore and folk tales of Ladakh, Spalbar strongly urged the experts to come up with prolific conservation proposals, assuring that LAHDC would financially support to the skilled persons who work in this field efficiently.
During the meeting, a major decision was taken to do the documentation of the famous Losar Festival of few villages.
