Is National Conference on other side of fence ? | | | It was expected. It was not unexpected of maverick National Conference leader Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal to attach motives and plan behind the armed attack on the Rural Development and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ali Mohd.Sagar in interior of Srinagar on Sunday in which one policeman was killed and three others including a civilian were injured. When Srinagar was rocked by four bomb explosions in October last Dr Kamaal was quick in blaming the Army personnel for these blasts.Reason,as he put it,being that since the Army was opposed to withdrawing AFSPA from some areas in the state it egineered these blasts to convince the central Government that the security scenario had not improved to the extent that AFSPA could be revoked from some areas. This criticism of the Army and later his fulminations against the Congress had forced the NC Chief,Dr Farooq Abdullah,to remove Kamaal from the post of Additional General secretary of the National Conference. He also lost the key post of chief spokesman of the party. The purpose of this action was to keep the NC leadership by the right side of the Congress led UPA Government and assuage the ruffled feelings of the Army functionaries. If not anybody else people in the state and those who matter in Delhi had expected that nowonwards Dr Kamaal would go in hibernation. It could not happen.Even without holding any important party post Dr Kamaal continues to be a newsmaker. This time he has done so by blaming the vested interests for engineering the armed attack on Sagar. One had expected that he will not identify these vested intersts. He has shown the guts, his father used to display on occasions when it suited him and took a U-turn when he would feel that it was needed.Dr Kamaal has, wittingly or unwittingly, identified these witnesses by saying that anyone including the Army, the separatists and the PDP could be behind the attack. While trying to substantiate his claim he has said like a bad lawyer that since militancy in Kashmir is dead there was no possibility that militants could have engineered the attack. He has posed a question. Why did not such attacks take place earlier ?Even having been in power and privy to the ruling NC's policies Dr Kamaal should have known by now that militants act as per their sweet wish and not go by any calender. It is no argument to find out why and how in such acts.Kamaal expects the security agencies including the police to identify the militants that were behind the armed attack on Sagar within less than one hour. Kamaal says that the vested interests had engineerd the attack because they want to keep the pot boiling.Does this mean militants do not want to keep the pot boiling ? Had it been the case why then infiltration from across the LOC continues ?The brother of Farooq Abdullah and uncle of Omar Abdullah has done it again. He says that the Army should be behid this attack because it is opposed to the plan on withdrawing AFSPA from some areas in the state. The NC leadership believes that the Army is opposed to AFSPA revocation because it wants unbridled powers and legal cover for indulging in human rights violations.Mustafa Kamaal has nothing to lose now.He has been already frustrated over the way the NC leadership did not induct him in the council of ministers headed by Omar.In order to dilute his level of anger and frustration he had been appointed additional general secretary and Chief spokesman of the National Conference which he has lost.Possibly there is some understanding within the top echelons of the National Conference under which Mustafa will continue to air views that could help the NC in regaining the ground that it has lost during the last three years. The Congress led UPA Government needs to find out whether the Abdullah family is with it or with the separatists ? |
