Importance of e-literacy
Dr. Pragya Khanna12/13/2011 11:12:46 PM
Grandma, Mrs. Sharma gets excited as a new picture of little Uday appears on the computer screen. Her delight becomes even more obvious as the printer begins to print. It is customary to see old couples waiting endlessly to hear from their sons and daughters residing away from them. Thanks to the fast growing world of information technology, it is now far easier to catch a glimpse of your children or grand-children and even to hear their voice at reasonable rates and as regularly as you want it. The only requisite is the availability of a computer with internet facility and webcam.
Electronic mail has spread swiftly to cover the whole globe in less than a decade. What a few decades ago was set aside for the sci-fi section of the libraries is at present the reality. Those who do not know to use the Internet for emails are total losers as they are dependent on the snail mail when a few keys on the computer would bring them immediate connectivity to their near and dear ones. 45 year old Natasha was unfortunately stuck in her home temporarily after an accident. Staying alone for long hours made her even more dispirited. Then one day she decided to use her husband's laptop in her free time and lo! it provided her a means to virtually get out of her boredom and experience more of what life has to offer.
There is really nothing that you can't do on the Internet. You can watch your favorite TV shows online, play games, collect information on any topic, diagnose diseases, learn the cures, consult experts on any subject, watch astronauts, read stories, in fact the possibilities are endless - there actually is a lot that can be done online. In today's world where everything has a computer element embedded in the system, having the basic knowledge about this wonder machine is like having a magic key which can open any door for you.
Every organization whether it is a bank, a post-office, railway, hospital or any departmental store depends on the use of computers and that has resulted in speed, efficiency and competence. People don't need to stand in long queues in banks to withdraw their money, thanks to the ATM machines; one can extract money any time. Whether it is drawing up an annual financial plan for your company for the annual general meeting, or desktop publishing, or looking for matrimonial alliance, or searching for latest or old news, computer usage cuts the time required to less than one tenth than it would have taken to do the task manually.
An added advantage is that knowledge of computer makes your resume complete. There is hardly any organization today that does not involve the use of computers in some or other field in their systems. A person having the basic training in computers is considered up-to-date with the existing technology and is sure to gain.
Computers being machines, provide highly accurate and precise answers and calculations. It also helps to eliminate the chances of doing repetitive tasks. A computer literate can use his/her time better ensuring that results roll out faster and better. They provide security, speed and convenience. One can book air tickets or railway tickets and make hotel reservations online. Moreover, you can give online exams and get instant results.
You can check your examination results online. A computer literate has incredible advantage above those who are not. This is why most schools and even degree colleges insist today on their students to complete the computer courses offered whether they feel they need it or not. You cannot really survive in today's technological world without knowing how to handle a computer.
The children have a tendency to pick up computers very fast and allowing the children to play around in the computer programs and experience how they work alone will teach children firsthand.
Moreover, children will have fun learning on the computer and the great thing is most of the time they hardly even know they are gaining educational skills.
Now what is holding you back from all of these benefits? It is only the need to understand modern day computers. It is not surprising that many adults do not want to learn anything new; they give up before they even try due to the fear of failing and venturing into unexplored terrain. Millions of people do use computers though, if it was that difficult to learn then not many people would be using them. Besides, there are lots of resources available to enable someone to learn how to use a computer. Most motivating would be to ask one of your children or grandchildren to teach you the basics. It would wonderfully show the potential of two generations being able to reverse roles and the older individual learn from the younger. Computers have leapfrogged the human society. They spearhead the human quest of eradicating social problems like illiteracy and poverty. It is difficult to imagine a world devoid of computers. This revolutionary technology is indeed a boon to the human race. Let's use this wonderful tool to make our lives more meaningful.
