| BJP urges CM to bring Bill on new Assembly Seats | | | JAMMU | JAN 11 State BJP Vice-President and spokesperson Prof. Hari Om today urged the State Chief Minister to drop the proposed bill on new assembly seats, as it doesn’t treat Kashmir and Jammu equally. He said the BJP is not opposed to the proposal of his government to increase the number of seats in Kashmir from 46 to 58 so that it is able to elect one legislator for every 275 sq. Kms and for every 49.723 voters. At the same time, the BJP, eh said, cannot endorse his government’s 46. he said the acceptance of this proposal would mean that Jammu would be forced to elect one legislator for every 710 sq. Kms and for every 66,521 voter. Prof. Hari Om said that as per the election records, the number of voters in Kashmir and Jammu is 28,83,955 and 30,59,986, respectively. He said it would be only prudent and fair if Jammu is also treated at par with Kashmir and given 61 Seats so that the people of Jammu, like Kashmir, are able to return to assembly one legislator at the rate of 49,723 voters. BJP spokesman further asked the State Chief Minister to create a minimum of 12 seats more in Jammu as its land area is double that of Kashmir. He said the BJP would appreciate teh4 Chief minister if he sees to it that the people of Jammu, like those in Kashmir, are able to return one legislator to the assembly for every 275 sq. Kms. He expressed the hope that the Chief Minister would accept the BJP’s rational and just demand and take steps aimed at ensuring due representation to Jammu on the basis of its land area, voters, accessibility and nature of terrain.
