Omar may raise another issue in coming days | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 13: With the Defense Minister, AK Antony making clear that AFSPA cannot be revoked without consulting the armed forces; the Chief Minister must have missed yet another beat. A statement issued by the Congress leaders last week about launching a massive campaign for rotational Chief Ministership must have shocked him. Omar has to raise another issue within a couple of days to secure his chair for another three years, believe the political experts. Omar Abdullah was assured a full term in office by Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh in July. Since then Omar has not made any mention of restoration of autonomy. However, on October 13 last year, the state government referred Justice Sageer's (Retd) recommendations to a panel headed by the Finance Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather for consideration. The Rather Panel was supposed to submit its report within three months. The Panel, however, completed three months on January 13. No report was submitted at the end of the deadline. Infact, no report has been submitted till date. Surprisingly the Panel was formed when New Delhi had already nominated its interlocutors on Jammu Kashmir. Omar completes three years in office on January 12. He has been accused of failure on almost all the fronts. The failure of his AFSPA campaign has only added to his woes. If the Congress leaders launch the campaign, Omar may be forced to play the autonomy card yet again. And if past NC-Congress relationship is any indicator then Omar has every reason to feel worried. Congress ditched NC in 1953, 75 and 84. There is no denying the fact that Rahul Gandhi happens to be a good friend of the Chief Minister. He can exercise his influence to save Omar. But there are no permanent friends or foes in politics. Sonia Gandhi who won acclaim for `throwing away' the Prime Minister's chair in 2004 has been accused of playing a `cunning puppeteer'. Can she sacrifice party interests for Omar? |
