Against ANNA, Against Opposition
12/13/2011 11:48:58 PM
Rustam
JAMMU, Dec 13: Before Nitish Kumar became Chief Minister of Bihar, the Transparency International India, a leading NGO, had adjudged Bihar as the most corrupt state in India. According to the NGO, Jammu and Kashmir was the second most corrupt state. The report to this effect appeared when Mufti Mohammad Sayeed of the PDP was ruling the state. Nitish has changed Bihar to a considerable extent. It is now no more considered as the most corrupt state. This means it is Jammu and Kashmir which has the distinction of becoming the most corrupt state in the country. It is a matter of grave concern.
What, however, is more disturbing is the fact that the NC, which is sharing power with the Congress in New Delhi and ruling the state in alliance with the Congress, has offered its fullest possible support to the Congress to counter social activist Anna Hazare, a crusader, and the opposition parties, BJP and the Left parties included. Scions of Sheikh Abdullah Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah, like the rattled, frustrated, desperate and clueless Congress spokespersons, general secretaries and a couple of ministers, are denouncing the opposition parties for the legitimacy they accorded to Anna Hzare and his crusade against corruption by participating in the debate the Team Anna organized on Sunday (Dec 11) at Jantar Mantar on the issues of corruption and Jan Lokpal/Lokpal.
Eight senior leaders, including Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley, had participated in the debate, expressed their views on the said issues, made common cause with Anna Hzare and assured him that they would make the Congress-led UPA Government bring and adopt a strong and effective Lokpal. They had in one voice said that they shared the views of Anna, except his suggestion that the judiciary should also be brought within the ambit of the Lokpal Bill. More importantly, they had dismissed as farce the report of the Congress-led Parliamentary Standing Committee on the proposed Lokpal bill and charged the Congress with showing utter disregard to the "sense of House" (parliamentary resolution on the Anna's demands).
It was this that has rattled the entire Congress leadership and its supporters like Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah. Farooq Abdullah is accusing the opposition parties of undermining the significance and authority of Parliament and dismissing them as irresponsible. His argument is that the opposition parties crossed the line by discussing policy matters outside the Parliament when the winter session of Parliament was on. Indeed, a very strange and ridiculous argument? Politicians can go to the people for garnering votes, but they cannot participate in the debates organized by the people on issues of public import. The BJP and other parties, including the CPI, have shown Farooq Abdullah his rightful place by telling him that they did not need his insane advice and that they know what the Parliament and parliamentary procedures mean to them. They have, in short, rebuffed Farooq Abdullah and told him to behave.
Omar Abdullah, who people say, like the Congress at the centre, is leading the most corrupt government, has become a laughing stock by questioning the credentials of those opposition leaders who took part in the debate. He sought to create an impression that the said leaders have won elections using money, amassed through illegal means. He also sought to create an impression that who among those political leaders had won an election through fair means. In fact, taunting the opposition leaders, he on Sunday tweeted who, among those political leaders who sat with Anna Hazare, has not indulged in electoral malpractices or unfair means or corrupt practices to win election. This was a bogus argument.
So, both the father and the son, instead of making common cause with Anna Hazare and supporting his crusade against corruption, joined hands with the Congress to support the corrupt. The rest is history. It must remain a matter of shame that we have in the country a political class which supports the corrupt and opposes those against corruption. It's no wonder that the people are extremely angry with and contemptuous of the Congress, the NC and similar other insensitive, arrogant, opportunistic and dictatorial outfits.
