Kamaal again targets Army, hails Mirwaiz | Congress' Silence | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 13: Chief Minister's father's brother Mustafa Kamaal has once again targeted the Army and asserted that "as long as Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) continues in Jammu and Kashmir, Army cannot be absolved of its involvement in any such incident". He attacked the Army while reflecting on the attack on Law Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar which left one policeman dead and three others injured. The incident took place at about 8 p.m. on Sunday in the downtown area, a stronghold of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq. Mustafa not only targeted the Army but also hailed Mirwaiz, saying he doesn't believe in violence. So much so that he said that the attack on Ali Mohammad Sagar was aimed at "maligning the image of Mirwaiz" and creating a divide between him and the National Conference. "Downtown has always remained hostile to the National Conference not only during the turmoil but before 1947 (as well). We (National Conference and the Mirwaiz family) have a history of hostility. The fresh attack may be a step to further that divide," he reportedly argued. "See the attack can be to defame Mirwaiz Umar Farooq because it took place in his stronghold. Since he (Mirwaiz) does not believe in violence it can be a conspiracy to correlate the two," he, in addition, reportedly said. When told that the responsibility of attack on the Law Minister has been taken by Pakistan-based terrorist outfit Jamiat-ul-Mujahedeen, Kamal responded saying it might be involved but he could not buy this theory without keeping his fingers crossed. In a way he stuck to his original stand and used the attack to defend Mirwaiz and create a suspicion in the minds of the people of Kashmir about the possible involvement of the Army, the PDP and others in the incident. "While there are professional elements in the militant ranks, there are vested interests in the militant outfits as well. They want to keep the pot boiling. They have their own purpose to keep violence continuing in Kashmir…The needle of suspicion points towards army, CRPF, other security agencies, separatists and Peoples Democratic Party who can orchestrate such incidents," he, according to one report, said. The people may say that Mustafa Kamaal attacked the Army and the AFSPA on his own, but such an argument cannot be accepted, notwithstanding the fact that he was unceremoniously removed from the positions he held in the part. It bears recalling that Kamaal had to resign from the posts of additional general secretary and chief spokesperson of the party following his blistering attack on the Army on October 25 this year, as also his attack on the Congress party and AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi. On October 25 this year, the Kashmir Valley had witnessed a series of grenade attacks in the Valley, including Srinagar, and Kamaal had pointed finger of suspicion towards the Army saying they might have done it because they were opposed to the idea of the AFSPA being revoked or even partially lifted from certain areas. As said, it is difficult to buy the argument that Kamaal launched a blistering on the Army on his own. He, it appears, took this radical and provocative stand after discussing everything with certain persons in the ruling National Conference. That the National Conference president Farooq Abdullah and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah have not dissociated themselves from what Mustafa Kamaal said does create some doubt in the minds of the people. Kamaal continued to be an important member of the party. Besides, he is a MLA. He has not been thrown out of the party and it is this that makes people believe that Kamaal is working as per a strategy worked out to achieve the ultimate objective: Revocation of AFSPA and withdrawal of the Army from Kashmir, the watchwords of Omar Abdullah. It is a different story that they mould fail and fail miserably as the Army is there to defeat their sinister game-plan. The Kamaal's suggestion that the attack was carried out to create schism between Mirwaiz and the National Conference speaks of something very serious and indicates that something poisonous is cooking up in the downtown and the National Conference headquarters. This formulation of Kamaal just cannot be overlooked as it smacks of some bigger game-plan, a sinister design. The Army and the security and intelligence agencies might have taken cognizance of the implications of what Kamaal said and, if not, they must without losing a moment. What about the coalition partner of the National Conference, the so-called Indian National Congress? It has, like in the past, overlooked the Kamaal's tirade against the Army and AFSPA, as if nothing happened. It continues to discharge its duties as its "B-team". But what can one expect from the Congress party which has already lost the way? It is a sinking ship, each and every Congress-watchers says so. Some of them have even written its epitaph. |
