early times report
Srinagar, Dec 14 : This summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir witnessed its coldest night of the season so far as the minimum temperature Tuesday fell to minus 3.3 degrees Celsius, and weatherman said mercury might slip further in the next few days.

Water in taps froze for the first time this season in Srinagar and suburbs, and the weather office here warned that mercury may fall further as similar cold, dry conditions would continue for the next few days.

The Leh town in the Ladakh region was the coldest place in the state on Tuesday, recording the minimum temperature at 13.6 degrees Celsius below the frezing point.

"Due to clear night sky, the minimum temperature dipped to minus 3.3 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest night of the season so far in Srinagar," Sonam Lotus, director of the local meteorological office, told

"We are expecting the same cold, dry weather conditions to continue for another three to four days, which means the minimum temperatures would fall further," he added.

The water taps in many localities in Srinagar city and rural areas were frozen for the first time this season. The temperature was, in fact, two degrees Celsius below what is normal for this time of the season.

"I had to light a small fire to de-freeze the water taps in the morning," said Sajad Ahmad, a businessman living in the suburb of the city.

"The minimum temperature in Leh town of the Ladakh region was minus 13.6 degrees today making Leh the coldest place in the state Wednesday. In the Kargil town of the same region, the minimum temperature was minus 12.4 degrees," the weather office director said.

The north Kashmir ski resort of Gulmarg recorded minus 8.3 degrees while the south Kashmir Pahalgam hill station witnessed minus 6.8 degrees today, according to the weatherman. (
