‘Beaten’ shopkeeper dies in SKIMS Mehbooba condemns

Srinagar, Dec 14 (KNS): A shopkeeper who was allegedly beaten by stone-pelting mob in downtown here on December 4 died this morning at SKIMS here.
Tariq Ahmad Bhat, 24, resident of Ranger Hamam, Nowhatta a shopkeeper at Gojwara Chowk was allegedly beaten by a group of stone pelters on December 3 this month, a police statement claimed.
“When he defied their dictates of forcing him to shut down his shop, a group of miscreants appeared in Gojwara area and resorted to stone pelting on shopkeepers to enforce a shut down. Tariq objected to their dictates and refused to close his shop. The miscreant pelted stones on his shop and severely beat him with a cricket bat,” the statement said.
“He suffered serious head injuries and was shifted to SKIMS, Soura, where he succumbed to the injuries today, police added,” it added.
An FIR has been filed in the police station Nowhatta, FIR No: 84/2011 under section 307,148,149,336/RPC. “We have arrested four stone pelters involved in the killing of the shopkeeper,” a police official told KNS.
Meanwhile, a senior police official told KNS that section 302 will be added in the already filed FIR and the culprits will be punished under murder section as well.
Meanwhile, expressing her deep shock over death of Bhat, Mehbooba Mufti president of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today demanded strong action against those who were responsible for his death.
In a statement issued here today, Mehbooba said that coercion has no place in the society and “we condemned strongly the way Tariq is reported to have injured in the broad day light which ultimately led to his unfortunate death.”
She said that politics can not be enforced through use of strong arm methods and those responsible for Tariq’s tragic death must be brought to book.
Mehbooba conveyed her deep sympathy to the family of Tariq and prayed for the peace of eternal.
