More the attack on Anna, more unpopular Congress would become
Bad Politics

JAMMU, Dec 14: The Congress party is extremely unhappy with Anna Hazare. The reason is that he has virtually brought the Congress-led government to its knees. The issue is corruption and the demand is an effective, strong and independent Lokpal having under its ambit the Prime Minister, all the ministers, the entire bureaucracy, the CBI and so on. The NC, which is sharing power with the Congress party, is equally unhappy with Anna Hazare. The bitter opposition of the NC leadership to Anna and his movement is understandable, as the leadership of both these parties has been sailing in the same boat. There is no difference whatever between the Congress and the NC as far as their attitude towards the people's problems and democratic principles is concerned. Both appear arrogant and dictatorial and both display their insensitivity to the extent one could. The RJD of Lalu Prasad Yadav and the NCP of Shard Pawar also hate Anna for identical reasons.
However, it is the infuriated Congress which has unleashed a no-holds-barred propaganda blitz against Anna Hazare and his team members and warned Anna to behave failing which he would be taught a lesson. In fact, Union Cabinet Minister Beni Prasad Verma, Minister of State in the Union Government Pradeep Jail, AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh, MP PV Hanumanth Rao, MP Satyavrat Chaturvedi, MP Sanjay Nirupam, spokesperson and MP Rashid Alvi, and even Law Minister Salman Khursheed and Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni, besides many others, have disapproved of the methodology Anna and his team have adopted to force the Congress-led UPA Government to adopt in the ongoing session of the Parliament an effective Jan Lokpal Bill.
The Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi loyalists had been angry with the determined and committed Anna since April this year, when he launched his crusade against corruption at national level and asked the Union Government to do the needful in this regard. What added more to the anger of the Rahul loyalists were the Anna's two statements, made on December 10 and 11. On December 10, Anna told reporters at the Press Club of India that Rahul Gandhi as Prime Minister would be dangerous for the country. On December 11, Anna told his audience at Jantar Mantar that it was Rahul Gandhi who had intervened and made the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Lokpal subvert the Parliamentary resolution (sense of the Hose) on the Lokpal. It was these two statements which infuriated the already under-attack Congress party and the result was a blistering attack on Anna, coupled with several warnings.
Dubbing Anna as an "RSS "spokesperson, Digvijay Singh reacted by saying the "remarks against Rahul Gandhi are politically motivated and aimed at creating an environment against the Congress". "The intent of all Anna team, Baba Ramdev and Sri Sri Ravishankar is political. Corruption is not the issue, their issue is how to create an environment against the Congress party," he said, and added that "there is no question of going back on the issue of strong Lokpal." He, in addition, charged the Team Anna with "acting at the behest of BJP" and asserted that the "BJP's game-plan has been to divert the attention from Sangh members involved in terror activities."
Congress MP PV Hanumanth Rao warned that the "party men won't tolerate such accusations with political motives". "Rahul Gandhi is not even in the government and he is only the party general secretary. Hazare is attacking him for weakening the Lokpal Bill to help vested interests tarnish his image. Congressmen will not tolerate this," Rao told reporters. Union Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma said: "The opposition is scared of Rahul Gandhi and Anna has become their spokesperson, especially that of the RSS. Is he a laat sahib? Let him come to UP (elections), we will see him there." "Anna is trying to scare Congress but we are not afraid of him. If he is 75, then Congress is 125 years old," the threatening Verma also said.
Another Congress leader and former Congress national spokesperson Satyavrat Charurvedi questioned the Gandhian's (Anna's) credentials, asking "if he is Raja Harishchandra?" "His (Anna's) word is not the one of Lord Brahma. Is he Satyawadi Harishchandra, I do not agree with this," also said the arrogant and uncouth Chaturvedi. Rashid Alvi accused Hazare and Opposition leaders of "indulging in politics". "Whoever was at Jantar Mantar yesterday was doing politics against the Congress," Alvi said, and added, that "it was Rahul Gandhi who wanted a strong Lokpal and worked for giving constitutional status to the proposed body". Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni had a word of advice for Team Anna. She said "in democracy Parliament is the best forum to discuss. The government feels raising the Lokpal issue outside Parliament is nothing else but doublespeak and double face".
These Congress leaders attacked Anna and his team overlooking the fact that more the attack on Anna more popular Anna would become and more unpopular the Congress party and its collaborators would become. This is bad politics and it also indicates the level of frustration among the Congress leaders ranging from Rahul Gandhi to the likes of Digvijaya Singh. The point is that the likes of Digvijaya Singh, Verma, Chaurvedi and Rao, to mention only a few, are simply digging the Congress' grave by attack Anna Hazare, who right now represents the national mood and the national sentiment.
