"Scam-tainted" bureaucrat prepares to try his luck in politics | | | Bharat Bhushan JAMMU, Dec 14: Senior bureaucrat Mehboob Iqbal (now retired), who has his name associated with three major scams in J&K -- JAKFED scam, Gulmarg land scam rural electrification scam -- now prepares to try his luck in politics. He almost made clear his intentions in this regard today when, in a public rally organised to welcome him on his first visit to Bhaderwah town after his retirement a few days back, he said he would "continue to serve the people of Bhaderwah." The rally is being seen by political observers as an occasion which he utilised to "show his strength and acceptibility in public". While he did not make it clear which political party he planned to join, it was largely felt that he had clandestinely entered into a "secret" pact with Congress. Some said it was the PDP which had sent him to Bhaderwah to consolidate his position. Though the rally looked non-political in nature as even the representatives of BJP and Sangh Parivaar were part of it, what disturbed the staunch Congress workers was the recepition given to him by some Ghulam Nabi Azad-loyalists. Azad's cousin Mohammad Sharief Niaz is the sitting MLA from Bhaderwah. His supporters, however, kept themselves away from the function. Some in Bhaderwah feel that a systematic effort was being made to project Mehboob as the next Congress candidate from Bhaderwah assembly segment. It was felt that a "senior" Congress leader was behind the today's show as he wanted to project Mehboob as the "most popular face" of Bhaderwah. Also, the new idea of having next MLA from Bhaderwah town was floated in the rally. Niaz is from Bhaderwah's far-flung Bhalessa area. People were of the view that the senior Congress leader was behind all this as he was personally against Niaz. The people of Bhaderwah almost declared that Mehboob was their leader and they would support him come what may. He was taken in the form of a procession from Pul-Doda to Bhaderwah. On way, he addressed people at nearly 50 places and assured them that he would work for their betterment. 75 sarpanchs of the Bhaderwah constituency received Mehboob when he reached Bhaderwah town.
Rousing reception given on superannuation by Azad-loyalists Secret" pact with Congress...? |
