Geelani detained for violating orders
7/31/2006 8:57:40 PM

SRINAGAR: Chairman of hard line faction of Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani and 24 of his associates were taken into preventive custody on Monday for staging a demonstration in violation of prohibitory orders, official sources said.

Geelani and 24 activists of the separatist amalgam were detained by police soon after they came out from Hurriyat headquarters at Rajbagh, shouting anti-India and anti-Israel slogans, the sources said.

"We were planning a demonstration to protest the worst kind of human rights violations in Lebanon by Israel and stopping us from registering peaceful protest is equivalent to terrorism," Geelani told reporters.
