Saffron Mandi-cum-Quality Control Lab coming up at Pampore: Rather | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT BUDGAM, Dec 15:In order to provide adequate marketing cover to the saffron growers and to eliminate middlemen exploitation, a “Modern Saffron Mandi” and a quality control lab will be established at saffron town Pampore shortly. An amount of Rs 22.6 Crore have been earmarked for the purpose under National Mission on Saffron. This announcement was made by Minister for Finance Abdul Rahim Rather at a function held at Sheikh-ul-Alam Hall Budgam today to distribute incentive cheques amounting to Rs 1.49 Crores among beneficiaries under National Mission on Saffron. Maintaining that the world famous Saffron of Kashmir is in great demand both at domestic as well as worldwide, the Minister called for focused attention towards enhancing production & productivity of Saffron, adding that the need of the hour was to improve post harvest processing and opening of more transparent marketing channels. Rather said strong domestic demand and high domestic prices are supporting factors to revitalize Saffron Cultivation in the State. . He called upon the farmers to utilize Modern Agriculture Technologies to increase production and productivity adding that farmers should switch over to cultivation of cash crops. He asked to Agriculture functionaries to provide timely quality agriculture inputs including hybrid seeds, fertilizers, modern farm machinery and agriculture implements to the farmers. Earlier, the minister inaugurated a Farm Machinery Mela for exhibition of new farming technologies, where in different farm machinery and implements were put on display by authorised dealers of various reputed companies. On this occasion 30 Irrigation Pump Sets, 5 Tillers, 40 Foot Sprayers were purchased by the farmers of the district Budgam, on which Department of Agriculture provided Rs 6.82 lakhs as subsidy.
