Afzal hanging being delayed on political considerations? (Paying tributes to martyrs becomes a ritual)
BALBIR RAM12/15/2011 11:40:44 PM
Almost ten years ago, it was on December 13, 2001 that a group of five dreaded terrorists equipped with the weapons succeeded in crossing with ease all the security barricades enroute country's highest temple of democracy, the Parliament, and killed eight security personnel, who gave them tough resistance and failed their nefarious designs of getting inside the Parliament. A major tragedy was averted as the session of both the houses of the Parliament -Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha- was on and the country's entire Political elite were present. However, we lost many people who stopped these armed terrorists from entering either of the house of the Parliament and martyred themselves for a great cause for which the entire nation will ever remain indebted to them. Like previous practice or to say as a formal ritual, on December 13 this year also, various programmes were organised across the country and tributes paid to the brave security men who sacrificed their precious lives guarding the sanctity of the Parliament of India. While the official programmes remained confined just to pay homage and observance of 2-minute silence for the peace of departed souls, various opposition political, social and other organisations held massive protests across the country, including our state, to register anger over the delay in hanging Afzal Guru, who was identified as the "Mastermind" behind this attack and sentenced to death by the Supreme Court of India way back in the year 2005. It was perhaps one of the fastest trial in the history of Independent India that a person was found guilty and finally ordered to be punished within a period of just about four years. Seems incredible, but it happened and the credit must go to the then BJP-led NDA government at the centre, which was jolted by such an attack which is being seen as attack on the entire nation. Quite apparently, the then NDA government ensured that the case being sensitive should be dealt with seriously and justice brought expeditiously. Ours is a democracy where elections are held every five years and people elect the government they deem proper. Call it the misfortune of the people, the latter returned the Congress to power at centre. It was the blunder committed by electorates and the same is being realised now on many fronts but the needles of the watch cannot be reversed, it is nature's rule and we all have to accept it. The question now arises, if a criminal has been held guilty and punished, why there has been delay in carrying on the verdict? When it took just four years to decide punishment, why it is being delayed for six long years by the government to honour the verdict? Can it be the policy of the government in chair to adopt such an attitude over such an important issue. Even if delayed, the government has not explained the logic and rationale behind this tactics ? For every action, there are valid reasons. But it is indeed beyond any imagination and comprehension, why Afzal's hanging is being delayed for years together. Does the UPA government have valid and convincing reasons to explain why the concerned file bites dust in the Union Home Ministry, Union Law Ministry, office of Delhi Government and finally in President's office for years. Who is responsible for this uncalled for delay?
The final decision lies with the Union government and it seems that the present Congress-led UPA government has least interest to hang Afzal Guru. The reason seems very clear-being political party, the Congress, which has always worked on caste based and religion based politics, wants it to be used as political tool to convey to a particular faith of the country that come what may, we can compromise at the nation's sovereignty and honour to remain in power. Is it a healthy ideology for the nation and nation's pride? It is for masses to understand and decide when it comes to electing new government next time.
It has been often preached that " a terrorist is a terrorist and has no religion". One can not understand why our union government and its concerned departments do not work on this principle and discharge their duties in a transparent and non-appeasing manner.
