Don't just condole, bring Tariq's killers to justice | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Dec 15: The murder of 25-year shopkeeper Tariq Ahmad Bhat of Range Hamam in downtown city at the hands of those forcing shutdown on shops and traffic has been widely condemned by everyone except the Kashmiri separatist leaders. Bhat had told his killers, who threatened him to shut his shop or face the consequences, that it would take him a little time to shut his shop. But, this proved to be asking for too much. Before the unfortunate shopkeeper could move to shut his shop, one of the hooligans struck the fatal blow on Bhat's head. He fell down unconscious at the very spot he was hit by his assailants. The unfortunate incident happened on 3rd of this month. For 14 days, doctors at the Soura Medical Institute tried their best to revive the unfortunate victim of separatist politics, but he succumbed yesterday. From the State Chief Minister to the ordinary citizens in the Valley everybody has condemned the incident. It is shocking that those very forces who had let loose the band of hooligans to ensure their shutdown call have so far remained silent on this gruesome murder. It is unlikely that they will ever condemn it in the manner such a shocking incident deserves to be condemned. It is likely that after a while some separatist politician might issue a statement blaming the government or the security forces for this incident. At best, they might even call the incident unfortunate but they would never in unambiguous terms condemn the perpetrators of this murder. The politics of shutdowns has finally become the politics of crackdowns by the vandalizing bands of goons who move out on the streets of downtown to enforce a shutdown. It is not the concern of those enforcing such separatist dictates whether their oft called Bandhs and shutdowns affect the livelihood of the ordinary Kashmiri who has to toil it out for the day to earn an honest day's meals for his family. The State administration has always be condemning such acts of hooligans but the test for the state administration now lies in bringing those responsible for the shopkeeper's murder to justice. It is not just enough to condemn the incident and score political points over an unfortunate incident like this. It is the responsibility of the administration to ensure such an incident does not happen again. The best way to ensure this would neither be through its condemnation or deployments of security forces in areas where separatists use the services of criminals to enforce their writ. The only way to enforce the rule of law is to bring those responsible for Tariq Ahmad Bhat's murder to justice. Unless an example is made of the killers by turning them quickly over to law, no amount of condolence messages or expressing solidarity with the victim's family would help. The killers must be made to pay for the unpardonable crime they have committed. Unless this done, we would always have innocent law abiding citizens like Tariq who would fall to blows of the hooligans those have been trying to become a law unto themselves in the city. |
