Act before Jammu observes strike on Dec 20 | Breaking deadlock | | Neha JAMMU, Dec 15: Now that the black-coated community of lawyers has given call for Jammu bandh on December 20, it is time for the NC-Congress coalition government to act before things take an ugly turn in Jammu province. The situation as it prevails today in the state is not normal. It is abnormal by any yardstick. The Kashmir Valley is on the boil. What happened today in Srinagar in the wake of the gruesome killing of a young Kashmiri businessman is an indication that things in the Valley are quite volatile and that the enemies of peace could exploit the situation to their advantage. The state government just can't afford to take things lightly. Contrarily, it has to take steps to keep things under its control in Kashmir. At a time when the situation in the Kashmir Valley is far from normal, it cannot afford to open another front. The case in point is the rise of a situation in Jammu province in the wake of the state government's dramatic decision to divest the judiciary of registration powers and transfer the same to the revenue officials. The situation in Jammu is such that it can snowball into a major confrontation between the government and the people of Jammu province who have started coming under the banner of the Bar Association Jammu (BAJ). The BAJ has been on strike since November 25. It has resolved to intensify its campaign in the coming days. It is high time for the state government to start negotiation with the BAJ so that the deadlock is broken before it is too late. Such a positive gesture on its part has become all the more imperative considering the fact that the traders associations, including Retailers' Association and Chamber of Commerce and Industry, besides the transporters' and tankers' associations, have made common cause with the agitating BAJ and assured the BAJ of their unqualified support. They have the capacity to paralyze the functioning of the state government. There are indications of the student organizations also taking the plunge and creating additional difficulties for the government. Students are already angry over the new job policy. Also important to note is the fact that nearly all the social organizations have expressed solidarity with the BAJ. The statesmanship demands deft handling of the situation. The best course would be discussion with the BAJ leadership and amicable resolution of the issue. Will the state government rise to the occasion and concede the genuine demand of the BAJ? Let's see what it does before the D-day to break the deadlock. |
