| PM to visit Assam on Jan 16 | | | NEW DELHI, JAN 12 Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will on Tuesday visit Assam where ULFA militants have killed 70 migrant labourers, even as a high-level security review meeting today decided to set up a committee to coordinate next month's National Games which the militants have threatened to disturb. The Prime Minister, who has condemned the killings as an "act of cowardice and inhumanity", will hold talks with state government and army officials. Union Home Secretary V K Duggal, who chaired a two-hour meeting of top Assam officials, heads of para-military forces, army officers and senior representatives from Home and Defence Ministries on the situation in Assam, told reporters that a high-level committee was being constituted to coordinate the forthcoming National Games in the state. A Joint Secretary rank official will head the committee, which will function within the Sports Ministry, he said adding that the members would be from the Ministry of Home Affairs, security agencies, Railways and the Indian Olympic Association. The Resident Commissioner of Assam Government will also be a member, he said. On the security scenario, Duggal said the situation now was "fairly under control" after operations and intensive patrolling in the affected areas. Efforts for building confidence among Assamese and non-Assamese people were continuing and out of 8,000 persons in camps, 3,000 had already left for their homes, he said. Refuting reports of exodus, he said that there was only "some movement" of migrant workers who were going back to their home as their work was finished. The Assam officials were asked to expedite payment of compensation to the victim families. |
