Sinking Saawar can be called Water Village | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Dec 16 : Surrounded on three sides by Ranjit Sagar Dam, water is available at just 5-6 feet below surface in a Kathua village in Jammu and Kashmir, according to Jammu University's department of geology.
Department head G M Bhat, who surveyed Saawar along with two colleagues, told UNI that the village has started sinking, though the process is slow. "Though it is a gradual process but the village has started sinking and in future it can be disastrous." Panic has gripped about 300 resident families of the village after scientific survey confirmed sinking of the area in its preliminary report.
Bhat said the three-member headed by him conducted survey after learning that water level in Saawar is just 5 to 6 below surface.
Initial findings have revealed "vertical sinking" at a very slow rate because of water seepage in the village which is surrounded by the dam from three sides, the geologist said.
"As per the geological conditions of the area, it (the village) will definitely sink and there are no remedial measures to (stop) it," he added.
Bhat said a larger chunk of the village, located in the foothills of lower Shivalik mountain range, is facing north due to which water from the dam adjoining it has started damaging it.
"Presently the process(of damage) is gradual but if it speeds up, the village’s front will get detached from the land and will sink," he added.
Saawar's houses have already started developing cracks and the soil erosion has also started due to rising water level in the dam, the expert said. |
