Militant infrastructure still intact in PoK: Army
1/12/2007 10:46:11 PM
Srinagar, Jan 12
The army claimed here on Friday that militant infrastructure in Pak occupied Kashmir (PoK) is very much in tact as was evident from recent infiltration bids in Uri sector of Baramulla district. Addressing a raising day function here today, the General Officer Commanding of 15 Corps Lt.Gen.A.S.Sekhon said "despite confidence building measures between India and Pakistan, militants continue to get support from the other side of line of control (LoC). This has been proved by recent infiltration bids in Uri". Quoting intelligence reports, the army commander said training camps, launching pads and communication hubs were intact across the LoC. However he also said due to cooperation of people, army in co-ordination with other security forces have achieved many major success against several militant groups active in the state.
Claiming that graph of militancy related violence has come down progressively during last five years in Kashmir valley, he said security forces were completely in control of the situation despite presence of some active militants in valley. Citing reasons for decline in militancy related violence, Lt. Gen. Sekhon said LoC fencing, night vision devices and intensified patrolling taken over the past three years has resulted in bringing down the graph of violence in valley. Hoping that new year would see dawn of peace in the state, the army commander said the security forces would, however, continue to keep up the pressure against militants. On the possibility of demilitarization in Kashmir, he said it is a policy decision to be taken by concerned authorities. He also refused to comment on a ceasefire with militants.
Claiming that those having surrendered before the army have realized the futility of engaging in militancy related activities and were eager to renounce the path of violence, he said some of the surrendered militants have told the security forces that while ordinary kashmiris youth were being discriminated against and viewed with suspicion , the militant leaders were leading lavish lives. Saying that security forces have neutralized 844 militants , the army commander claimed that 113 militants surrendered during past one year. He along with other senior army officers laid a wreath on the memorial of 15 Corps at Badami Bagh Cantt here today.
