Filmmakers plead for reopening of theaters in Kashmir
12/16/2011 10:49:39 PM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu Dec 16 : Noted filmmaker, Vidhu Vinod Chopra, has, in an open
letter to the Jammu and Kashmir Government urged the authorities to
reopen the theaters in the Valley which stand shut since 1990.
Chopra, known for his recent Munnabhai series and 3-idiots, has said
that the cinema will provide catharsis of emotions for people in
Kashmir who have lived in hell for two decades now.
Pertinent to mention that cinema halls were forcibly shut when
militancy took roots in Kashmir during 1989-90.Not only the theaters
but the wine shops and bars too were shut following repeated attacks
by the weapon equipped militants.
President National Conference and Union Minister for New and Renewable
Energy, Dr Farooq Abdullah had recently called for reopening of the
cinema halls in the valley which had attracted loud protests and
criticism from the separatists. But Farooq made a sensible statement
on the issue when he said that what harm the opening of theaters would
do when people enjoyed watching films relayed through cable network
system and on VCRs ?
Police sources said that possibly separatists do not know,or feign
ignorance on increase in the number of youths watching blue films on
VCRs.
It is in this context that Vinod Chopra has in his letter stated that
if he became a filmmaker it was the outcome of his frequent visits to
the theaters in Srinagar especially the Broadway. He has reminisced
that being poor he would get a pass from the owner of the Broadway
theater Vijay Dhar.
Chopra has said that by reopening he theatres people in Kashmir would
get a chance to learn and make a new beginning. While accepting that
his rise was the result of his learning initial lessons from watching
films in Srinagar Chopra has said how could you deny the same
opportunity, I had received, to thousands of young Kashmiris ?
The noted filmmaker has said that since people in Kashmir have a few
jobs and little escape they need to have some recreation and learning
from watching the films for which the theaters need to be opened.
Others connected with the Bollywood too have supported Chopra and
Farooq's plea for reopening of cinema halls and want that people
should cooperate with the Government in reestablishing peace and
normalcy in Kashmir so that more and more filmmakers descend on the
valley for shooting films which could generate addition resources for
the people and the Government.
