Valley freezes at minus 3.8
12/17/2011 12:23:36 AM

srinagar: Parts of the world famous Dal Lake were frozen near banks as people in the summer capital, Srinagar, woke up to a coldest morning of the winter so far after the minimum dipped to minus 3.8 degrees this morning, four degree below normal.
The nights will remain coldest while the maximum will be above normal in the Kashmir valley due to open sky in the absence of Western Disturbances (WD), originating in the Arabian sea and entering the region through Afghanistan and Pakistan.
A Met department spokesman said there would be no major change in the weather during the next 24 hours. The weather will remain dry but cold due to icy cold winds, he said, adding that the day temperature will remain above normal.
Parts of the famed Dal Lake near banks were frozen, particularly at Shalimar and Cheshmashahi crossing early this morning due to minus temperature. This was for the first time that parts of the Lake were frozen near banks this winter.
However, the frozen parts started melting as the day progressed.
The Lake was completely frozen in 60s when a jeep crossed to another end of the lake on frozen surface.
In 1986 it was again frozen and became major attraction for locals and tourists, who had come from different parts of the country and abroad to witness it. Locals and tourists took photograph while youths played cricket and ice hockey on frozen surface.
Last year the lake was frozen and people could see taking photographs in the middle of the lake. However, to avoid any tragedy, police personnel were deployed in the area to prevent people, mostly youngesters to walk or play on the frozen surface.
This was the lowest minimum temperature in Srinagar, spokesman said adding earlier lowest was 3.3 degrees on December 14.
People from many areas, particularly in the outskirts, said water taps were also frozen, affecting water supply in the morning.
However, frozen taps later melted as the day progressed, they said.
