Tourists stay away from Mansar lake as entire road stretch dotted with "death traps"

samba (jammu), Dec 16: The famous Mansar lake, which attracts tourists every year from different parts of the country, sans visitors nowadays. Reason: Road to it is dotted with death traps in the form of pits that have come all over.
Tourists feel that by attempting to travel on the 25-km Samba-Mansar tramac road, they would be putting their lives in danger. Also, they do not want to make their journey pathetic and exhausting by travelling on the dilapidated road.
The lake, which is on the national and the state tourist maps, is situated in the midst of lusting greeneries of Shivaliks. It is visited by thousands of domestic and outside tourists every year.
It is popular among tourists and boating enthusiasts. Some rare species of migratory birds also visit there from colder regions in winters.
The drive on it is not smooth nowadays. Half an hour journey may take two hours as pits, which have come up on almost every part of the road, act as unapparent sources of danger.
Another road, that connects city's peripheral Sidhra area with Mansar, is also in a bad shape ahead of Sruinsar lake, which falls on the way.
So, both the roads act as a spoiler for the tourist spot. Some pits are so deep that it looks very risky while negotiating them.
The enthusiasm of tourists, or school children going on excursion to the lake is almost lost while covering this road stretch. A smooth road would definitely attract more tourists to the lake.
Most of the locals come here for religious purposes. They offer prayers at the old Sheshnag temple and feed fishes in the lake. Fishing is strictly banned and even thinking of it is considered a sin.
Official sources said the "road falls under the state sector and money for its construction comes from the central road fund".
The tourism department has also done nothing to get the road repaired, or reconstructed.
When the attention of a tourism department official was drawn towards poor facilities at Mansar, he said efforts were being made to beautify the lake area by developing attractive landscapes around it.
He said there was also a proposal to encourage businessmen to make good hotels and restaurants at Mansar.
He admitted that apart from good food and lodging facilities, good road was also likely to give a boost to tourism in the area.
