srinagar, Dec 16: "Allow me to hold a rally in Lal Chowk and will show you whose writ runs in Kashmir." This is how Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani responded to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's statement wherein he had urged the separatists to refrain from hooliganism and fight politically."
Lal Chowk, pertinent to mention, remains out of bounds for the separatists since 2008. Geelani also continues to be under perpetual `house arrest' since last year's agitation. "If armed forces are withdrawn all of them (pro-Indian lobby) will go into hiding", he said in a hard hitting statement.
Geelani's supporters have welcomed the challenge. They are confident that nobody from the pro-India lobby can address a rally in Lal Chowk or anywhere else in the Valley without security. "Geelani on the other hand travelled in auto rickshaws at times. He gave police a slip several times to reach his supporters in Lal Chowk and down town area of Srinagar city", they said.
In September last year Geelani challenged former chief minister Dr Farooq Abdullah to address a rally in Lal Chowk. Geelani's challenge generated interesting discussion across Kashmir. While some quarters criticized Geelani for being "rude" others have welcomed the statement. According to them this was the best way to ascertain the representative character of the people of Kashmir.
The enthusiastic supporters even amended Geelani's challenge. "We will not tell them to address a rally because we know they cannot do it. Instead let them walk from erstwhile Palladium cinema to erstwhile Regal cinema on any `working' day", they challenged.
New Delhi has been asking the Kashmiri leadership to prove their representative character. The JKLF chairman, Malik Muhammad Yasin at one point of time formed his own election commission with renowned human rights defender Tapan Bose and Sidiq Wahid as its members. However, the idea could not take off for various reasons. The idea was severely opposed.
