Dr Jitendra Singh delivers lecture on 'Diabetes in Elderly' | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Dec 17:On the occasion of “World Pensioners Day” today, Central Government Pensioners Welfare Association organized a public lecture on "Diabetes in Elderly" by Dr Jitendra Singh, renowned Diabetologist, National Professor and noted author who was also Guest of Honour on the occasion. Quoting from his book ,”Looking ahead with Diabetes”, Dr Jitendra Singh said that a diabetic who knows the most, lives the longest and added that management of diabetes in elderly population called for certain special considerations. With the average life span of Indians on the rise, the greatest challenge is to ensure that there is no adverse effect on heart, eyes, kidneys and other organs as the diabetic person advances in age, he said. Dr Jitendra Singh said it is an irony that diabetes was causing disability and death even though most of the diabetic complications were 100% preventable with proper blood sugar control and regular monitoring. He also referred to certain peculiar situations in elderly diabetics like, for example, ”hypoglycemia unawareness” wherein an elderly diabetic was at risk of experiencing sudden fall in Blood Sugar level without any symptoms. Elderly Diabetics particularly those with impaired vision due to diabetes should preferably be administered medication by an alert care-taker, he suggested . Emphasing on lifestyle changes, diet and exercise, Dr Jitendra Singh said that the diet and exercise programme for each elderly diabetic requires to be individualized depending upon the individual’s overall status of health and the condition of vital organs like heart and kidneys.
