14 Panchayats covered under PYKKA Sports for better career options: Chib | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Dec 17:Minister for Medical Education and Youth Welfare & Sports R S Chib on Saturday called for larger participation of rural youth in sports activities, saying this is imperative for sharpening their mental faculties and physical growth. While distributing sports kits to six Panchayat Sports Clubs at a function here, the Minister said that sports provide a unique career opportunity to the talented youth with growing vistas in the field around the world. “We have no dearth of talent; the need is only to identify and sharpen it”, Minister for Health Education and Sports Chib said while enumerating the measures being taken for giving fillip to sports by raising appropriate and adequate infrastructure in the rural areas. He said thrust is equally being laid on popularizing and promoting various sports in remote and far flung areas to enable youth to compete their urban and city competitors on equal footing. Spelling out several initiatives taken for promoting sports in the State, it was stated that 56 blocks of Jammu and Kashmir had been recommended for being covered under Panchayat Yuva Krida Aur Khel Abhiyan (PYKKA) in 2009-10 and 2010-11, of which infrastructural facilities are being created in 14 Panchayats. PYKKA is a rural sports initiative introduced by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to promote youth and social development through sports. PYKKA provides funds for the development and maintenance of sports grounds in villages and block Panchayats. It plans to introduce such facilities throughout the country over a period of 10 years. The Minister exhorted youth to engage themselves in constructive avocation and take benefit from various schemes for excelling in their chosen careers. “Sky is the limit for promising and talented youth”, he observed. Organised by the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council, the event witnessed enthusiasm among sports lovers, who expressed gratitude to the Minister for taking extra pains in reaching out to the neglected and remote areas. Besides the Sarpanches and Panches of various blocks, a large number of sports lovers were present on the occasion. Secretary, Jammu and Kashmir Sports Kiran Wattal, Director General Youth Welfare and Sports, J P Singh and Chief Sports Officers, M S Bawa were also present at the event.
