Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 17: Her husband and in-laws had a sigh of relief when she informed them about her pregnancy. The poor women had been declared infertile by the gynaecologists. Now she was carrying a foetus in her womb. The delighted couple was all praise for the `faith healer' in the outskirts of Srinagar who had done the impossible with his Taweez (Amulet). The couple willingly paid him Rs 60,000. Scores of infertile couples rushed to him and he `obliged' all.
Shazia (name changed) went for an USG after three months. It showed nothing. Shocked she rushed to the `faith healer' along with her husband. "Do not worry. Everything will be alright. You will give birth to a baby", he assured. Shazia returned home satisfied.
He gave her a kind of powder in the fifth month and her abdomen began to rise. In the eight month, she looked like a pregnant women. Her husband would smile at her inflated abdomen. Soon after, the shopping for the expected baby commenced. But nine months passed and the baby showed no signs of coming out of the `eternal world'. Another USG shocked the couple. There was nothing in her womb. Another visit to the faith healer bore no fruit. She was asked to wait. In the thirteenth month of her `pregnancy' her patience gave way. But she was made to wait. And after completing eighteen months, the reality dawned on her. The faith healer was a fraud. But other patients were still waiting. One of them was taken to a gynaecologist who gave her a superficial cut in the lower abdomen. After a few days she returned from the nursing home. "The baby was born dead", he told her in-laws.
However, a patient informed the police. The `faith healer' went into hiding. But the police nabbed him. Some patients were compensated. Others want to forget the horrifying and humiliating experience. He was booked under Sections 420, 342 RPC in FIR No 272 of 2011 Police Station Parimpora. The accused `faith healer' has been identified as Ghulam Muhammad Sheikh r/o Ghulam Nabi of Parimpora.
