Early Times Report
JAMMU, Dec 17: Barring two cabinet ministers, both of whom are facing serious corruption charges, Jammu and Kashmir Congress is united over the issue of rotational Chief Ministership.
Be it Ghulam Nabi Azad or Prof. Saif-ud-din Soz, they want their own Chief Minister. They are waiting for the high command to take a decision and communicate the same to the party rank and file within next one week. Sources said that seven congress MLAs, of whom five are ministers, have verbally as well as in writing communicated to Congress high command their demand of having their own Chief Minister by next month.
They have informed New Delhi Congress that if their wish is not fulfilled, they would not hesitate in resigning from the membership of the party. Congress leadership has begun counting numbers both in New Delhi as well as here in Jammu. Sources disclosed that senior leaders of the party have begun secret parleys with MLAs, both independent and those belonging to the regional parties.
The political scene is likely to get murkier in the coming. Sources said that if Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram is shown the door in New Delhi, J&K Congress would press panic button and seek its own Chief Minister. They said that apart from UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, Chidambaram has been Omar's greatest support. Sources disclosed that it is after being hinted by the Union Home Minister that Omar began parroting revocation of AFSPA from some districts in J&K.
They said that NC could do well to remember that at 6.30 pm on October 26, 2005; it was PDP-led government in Jammu and Kashmir and by 6.45 pm, the Congress high command had decided to replace it own Chief Minister. Sources further said that even in the year 2005, two days prior to the drama that took place in New Delhi, certain top party sources had rated high prospect of PDP being allowed to continue beyond November 2.
A senior congress leader, who is also a cabinet minister on the condition of anonymity, said "We are united over issue of rotational Chief Minister (CM). We want our own CM for next three years." He reiterated that no check can save Congress from disaster if they do not have their own CM for the next three years.
A senior Congress leader from New Delhi said that things in Jammu and Kashmir would not remain same. "We would not disappoint out party workers who have been demanding their own Chief Minister. But we would also not like to do anything which would destabilize a frontline state like Jammu and Kashmir. A beautiful balance has to be maintained for all times to come," asserted the close aide of CM.
Regarding the AFSPA revocation row, he said "Union Home Minister has put this in the ear of Omar that AFSPA would be revoked from some districts. Defence minister has been staunchly opposing this move. But since Omar relies heavily on HM, he is sure of getting the same revoked. Whether or not this happens is a million dollar question which only time would answer."
