Wait of over 60 years for justice | POK refugees up in arms against Govt | | ET Report JAMMU, Dec 17: Waiting for justice for last over 60 years the POK refugees who have been victims of the 1947 partition and subsequent wars have been deprived of their rights till date. Continuing their struggle since the day one of their forced exodus from POK two generations of these refugees have passed seeking justice but the successive governments have turned a blind eye to their plight. Deprived of the ex-gratia and compensation for their left over properties the refugees since then are on roads for resolution of their demands but no one from both central and state governments is ready to listen to their plight. The refugees for over a year now are on agitation and hundreds of them have offered for court arrests at a number of time in the past to highlight their problems but till date no one from government side came forward to redress their grievances. Agitated over Governments rigid attitude towards them these migrants are up in arms against it and have warned to launch a decisive battle for settlement of their demands. ``We are left with no alternative but to intensify struggle to seek justice'' said Rashpal Singh president of the POK Refugees Front. He said ``though we have been continuously fighting for our rights since 1947 but no one in central and state governments showed willingness to hear us'', he said ,adding ``the callousness of the Government has forced us to intensify the struggle''. Singh accused the State government of misleading the people on the issue saying that it (government) showed never sincerity to settle their problem. The recommendations made by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) were also not implemented in letter and spirit and the relief sanctioned by the Central Government for the displaced families living in non camp area were not distributed till date by the concerned authorities for unknown reasons. He said being poor these refugees are not in a position to grease the palms of authorities for which they have withheld the compensation to them. The refugee families are living in abject poverty and their condition is pitiable, he said, adding no steps for their upliftment have been taken till date. If this attitude of the government continues the refugees who constitute a sizeable number of population in Jammu region teach the coalition a lesson in next date said, Kabla Singh a refugee living in Bhor Camp. ``We have always sided with congress in past elections but now we must change the strategy and vote for only that political party which assures to solve our problems after coming to power'' he added. |
