People can’t have any expectation from a party which seeks bribe from its own workers: Mufti | | | JAMMU, Dec 18: Expressing grave concern over rampant corruption in the state, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) patron and former Chief Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed today accused the Omar Abdullah led Government of total failure on all fronts. Addressing a public meeting at Shakti Nagar here this afternoon Sayeed said how transparency can come into the system as 10 percent percentage is fixed for allotment of tenders from top government level. The corruption is eating up vitals of the society, he added. Without naming Mohammed Yousuf Shah NC worker who was killed in cash for seat scam said what can be expected from a party which seeks a bribe from its own workers. He said the good works done by his government in coalition with Congress have been negated by the Omar Abdullah led coalition and the Accountability Commission has been made a toothless organization. ``We wanted that a transparent system is evolved in the state so that no one is deprived of his rights and this was the idea of constituting the Accountability Commission as an autonomous body but this Government has made it totally defunct’’ Mufti added. Mufti said that is party is for change in system so that the power vests in the hands of people. This is the main objective of PDP and the Party is for peoples participation in democracy. ``The change will not come from Delhi but the power lies with people within state’’. He said for the first time in 2002 the people participated in democratically in electing a Government when the NC was unseated from power in the state. ``My government from 2002 to 2005 tried its best for equitable development of all three regions of the state and we expected that this trend will continue but same could not happen latter’’ he added. The former Chief Minister said that many public friendly steps were taken during that Government and we tried empower and strengthen the basic institutions of democracy which was all negated by the present Government. Mufti said that for the first time after a long gap Panchayat and local bodies elections were held in the state and now this Government has again made these basic institutions of democracy useless. The Panchayat elections were held but till date they have not been empowered. Reiterating his slogan that ``not bullet but dialogue’’ was needed to solve the crisis in the state, the former Chief Minister said he sticks to that policy today as well. I motivated the then Vajpayee Government also that if they want that peace should be restored in the state in general and Kashmir Valley in particular then the policy of dialogue needs to be pursued with Pakistan. It was on the basis of that suggestion that Vajpayee initiated a process of holding dialogue with Pakistan and he made a public announcement that a neighbour can’t be changed. Sayeed said that it was during the visit of Mr Vajpayee that he appealed him to extend the North South corridor to Jammu and Kashmir state and same was agreed by him but this Government shelved that project also. Mufti said that during his time he did not keep the central schemes in pocket but got them implemented in DDB meetings while the situation is altogether this time. He said if India-Pakistan agree to settle the Kashmir issue the formula given by PDP is the only alternative to settle the issue amicably.
