Mega cricket event in Feb, April ’12 | Chib announces holding of Jammu Premier League | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, DECEMBER 19- Minister for Medical Education, Technical Education, Youth Services & Sports Mr. R.S. Chib on Monday announced holding of a mega cricket event under ‘Jammu Premier League’ (JPL) in February and April next year. The T-20 Cricket Tournament will be conducted on a grand scale in which premier cricket clubs would participate, the Minister said while discussing the modalities for the prestigious event at a high level meeting here. The tournament will be played at the District level under Phase-I and after the qualifying teams would participate in the Phase-II of the league matches. The District Sports officers shall be the nodal officers for the tourney. He referred to the similar grand tournament, Kashmir Premier League (KPL), held in Srinagar which turned out to be a grand success with cricketers and lovers of the game participating in a big way this summer. He said the Jammu Premier League too will be organized on the same pattern. Commissioner/Secretary to Government, Technical Education, Youth Services & Sports, B.A. Runiyal, IAS, Director, Youth Services & Sports, J&K J.P. Singh, KAS, Director Information Khawaja Farooq Renzu Shah, Secretary, J&K State Sports Council, Kiran Wattal, Chief Engineer-16 Corps Brig. Sandeep Rawat, Director School Education Department, Gulzar Ahmed Qureshi, Deputy Director, Youth Services & Sports S.S. Bali and other senior officers were present in the meeting. Mr. Chib directed the constitution of Committees at District level for effective and successful conduct of the event. He said the objective of holding such a mega event is to give big fillip to sports activities, particularly in rural and far off pockets of the State. “This will be a regular feature now and such events would help polishing the unexplored sports potential in the rural areas”, he maintained Acknowledging the crucial support being extended under “Sadhbhavana Scheme” of the army in supplementing the efforts of the government for development and welfare of the rural areas, the Minister added that “Operation Sadhbavna” has helped the Rural scenario and broadened the sports base of the youth. “It is quite appreciable that army, besides safeguarding the integrity and soverignity of the nation, extends tremendous services through various civic action programmes”, he added. He extolled that Army’s services will greatly help Government’s endeavour of encouraging the sports potential of youth of the State especially rural and far off areas. Spelling out the efforts of Coalition Government under the leadership of Omar Abdullah in expanding enhanced sports facilities in the State, the Minister reaffirmed that this vital field is receiving focussed attention in every aspect of its growth and development. The Minister said that such events will enable the State to occupy a special place in the world of sports besides ensuring a proper platform to the youth to exhibit their sports talent. Reaffirming to the endeavours of Central Government in promoting sports in unattended parts, the Minister said that schemes like PYKKA (Panchayat Yuva Khel Krida Abhiyan), are a step forward in this direction. He expressed gratitude to the Centre for extending all support to promote sports in the State.
