Maharashtra girls take home School Games Cricket trophy | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Dec 20: The tough side of Maharashtra today lifted the cricket trophy in the 57th National School Games for under-19 girls, organised by the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS), at different venues, here today.
In the title clash, that took place today at MA Stadium, here, Maharashtra registered an outright victory beating Delhi girls by 10 wickets.
Earlier, after winning the toss and batting first, Delhi scored 133 runs for the loss of two wickets in the stipulated 25 overs, which, in reply Maharashtra chased in 19.1 overs without loss. Openers Kajol Bhatia and Priya Punia slammed half-centuries. While Bhatia made 64, Priya contributed 55-ball 51 runs to the total. From Maharashtra, Nikita Solanki and Gayatri Naik claimed one wicket each.
In reply, Maharashtra attained the goal without losing any wicket sparing five deliveries of their innings. Skipper Sarika Koli was top scorer with 67 runs while Hemali made 49 runs.
For her fabulous batting display, Sarika was adjudged woman of the match and was declared woman of the series as well.
“I’m happy that I came up to the expectations of the team by scoring three half centuries in five innings played during the competition,”said ecstatic Sarika while expressing satisfaction over her performance.
The final was officiated by Anurag Mishra and Ajay Raina as umpires, while Raj Kumar Dogra and Rakesh maintained the scorebook. Rajesh Dhar and BK Tickoo of DYSS were commentators.
Meanwhile, the winners of Wushu event in both boys and girls were also presented medals and trophies.
While Jammu and Kashmir bagged 15 medals with one gold, 10 silver and 4 bronze to receive runners up trophy while Delhi emerged as overall champion
Governor NN Vohra was chief guest in the valedictory function. He gave away winners and runners-up trophies in cricket and wushu as also other individual prizes. Later, he declared the 57th National School Games closed amidst colourful function.
Speaking to the gathering of participating teams and the members of the organizing committees, Governor appreciated the winners and congratulated the organisers for smooth and successful conduct of this sporting extravaganza.
He said that such events serve as a launching pad for budding sportspersons to explore their hidden talent, besides providing them opportunity to interact with their counterparts from the other states to help in cultural exchange.
Minister for Youth Services and Sports, RS Chib in his address appreciated the participating players for showing sportsman spirit throughout the tournament. Earlier, Commissioner Secretary, Technical Education and Youth Services and Sports, B A Runyal welcomed the chief guest and other distinguished gathering.
Prominent among others present on the occasion were Additional Director General of Police, K Rajendra, Inspector General of Police and chairman of State Wushu Association, HK Lohia, Vijay Saraf, vice president, Director Education, GA Qureshi, Director DYSS, Jaipal Singh, Secretary, Sports Council, Kiran Wattal.
