Kashmiri leadership and fanatics responsible for trust deficit
Harassment of K Youth -- II
12/21/2011 12:12:41 AM
Rustam
Jammu, Dec 20: Remember, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed these views at a function organized by the State and Central Governments in the University of Kashmir to distribute appointment letters to as many as 1,060 Kashmiri youth under "Project Himayat". The function, among others, was also attended by Union Minister for Rural Development Jairam Ramesh, Chairman Economic Advisory Council to Prime Minister C Rangarajan, Law, Rural Development and Panchayati Raj minister, Ali Mohammad Sagar and officers of both the State and Central Governments.
Omar Abdullah is not the only Kashmiri leader who expresses concern over what he calls harassment of the Kashmiri Muslims, including youth, outside the state and wants the Indians to treat them well. Almost all the Kashmiri leaders express similar views and accuse the non-Kashmiris of maltreating Kashmiri Muslims, as also accuse them of terming them as extremists and militants. To be more precise, the Kashmiri leadership wants all the Indians to adopt and accommodate Kashmiri Muslims and allow them to lead a dignified life outside the state but, they, like Sheikh Abdullah, do not want the non-Kashmiri to enjoy similar privileges in Kashmir. They are intolerant, conservative and exclusivist in the approach and actions.
The view of the Kashmiri leadership that the Kashmiri Muslims who seek jobs or work or study in different parts of the country are being harassed is an exaggerated and motivated charge. There is no truth in it. There could be some isolated incidents because of certain local factors or because of certain undesirable activities undertaken by the Kashmiri youth or otherwise, but it would be too much to say that the people across the country ill-treat or hate the Kashmiri Muslims as a policy.
Let's accept for the sake of argument that the apprehension/charge of the Kashmiri leaders, including Omar Abdullah, is well-founded. Then, the question needs to be asked: Who is responsible for creating a divided between the Kashmiri Muslims and the rest of the Indians? The answer would be that the Kashmiri leaders like Omar Abdullah are squarely responsible for all the alleged troubles and harassment the Kashmiri Muslims face outside the state. Has any of the Kashmiri Muslim leaders ever hailed the Indian presence in the state and respected the Indian institutions? Or, has any of the Kashmiri Muslim leaders ever appreciated the Indian Constitution, the Indian laws and the symbols of Indian civilization and the Indian State? Or, has any of the Kashmiri Muslim leaders ever considered Kashmir as an integral part of India? The answers to all these three questions would be one and the answer is a big NO.
The Kashmiri leadership hates and despises the Indian Constitution and the Indian laws and wants their rollback. They hate the Army and seek withdrawal of the anti-terror laws. They seek greater autonomy, self-rule, independence and merger with Pakistan saying Kashmir is a Muslim-majority region. They want New Delhi to treat Jammu and Kashmir as a republic within the Indian Republic as a first step towards their final goal: segregation from the political and constitutional organization of India. They want New Delhi to pump into Kashmir billions and billions of hard-earned Indian rupees and they, in return, behave like the rebels behave. They have created mistrust between the Kashmiri Muslims and the rest of the Indians; they have widened the gulf between them and the rest of the Indians by preaching anti-India views. The fact of the matter is that the bulk of Kashmiri leadership has consistently preached two-nation theory and the result has been what we are seeing with our own eyes.
Will the Kashmiri leadership look all these facts in the face and refashion their whole approach towards India, which has consistently accorded Kashmir a very special treatment at the cost of the people of Jammu and Ladakh, nay at the cost of the Indian nation? Will they accept their guilt and reform themselves? They have to change their attitude towards New Delhi and the rest of the Indians if they really wish their co-religionists to lead a dignified life in the rest of the country. They have to throw open Kashmir to all the Indians the way they want the rest of the Indians to accept and accommodate the Kashmiri Muslims and all them to exercise all rights, without any exception. The ball is in their court. It's no use beating about the bush. (Concluded)
