With 675 cases of honour killings in nine months Pakistan surpasses India

Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 20: Despite the intervention by the courts including the supreme court which had gone to the extent of directing the state Governments to act against the police and civil authorities if they failed to check honour killings there has not been much improvement in what is called the barbaric phenomenon of the role the Panchayats in supporting these hnour killings in some parts of India.
But the number of honour killings in Bihar, UP, MP, Punjab, Haryana and other states can be counted on finger tips. But Pakistan seems to have set a new trend in the south Asian region as far as honour killings are concerned.
According to human rights activists there were 675 cases of honour killings in Pakistan between January and September 2011. If the tentative figures for October to December were included the number could touch 750. There were about 791 honour killings in Pakistan last year.
The leading human rights group says that 675 women and girls were murdered for "defaming their family's honour." Out of this 450 women were killed on charge of having illicit relations, 129 girls having been killed for having married without the permission of their parents.
Before the final deed of carrying out the honour killings most of the women were gangraped and after that they were murdered. The human rights group says that 19 women were killed by their sons, 49 by their fathers and 169 by their husbands without trying to know what were their faults.
If in Pakistan honour killings are done to award a barbaric punishment to women who had illicit relations or to those who had married without the permission of their parents in India caste factor plays a key role in the cast dominated social fabric in various Indian states.
In UP and Haryana various Khap Panchayats have joined hands to defy the supreme court directions with the result even after the supreme court directions to the state Governments there have been a number cases of honour killings in Haryana, Punjab, Bihar and UP.
In various cases police avoid giving protection to a couple that have tied the wedding knot either without the permission of their parents or have gone in for intercaste marriages. It means members of the Khap Panchayats have no respect for human emotions and individual liberty.
Yes, if the Panchayats have to punish anyone they should penalise harshly rapists and those who go in for forcible marriages.
If not in any other fields human rights activists in India and Pakistan have joined hands in their move to check honour killings which are not only barbaric but a challenge to the civilised society in the two countries.
