| And so is NC on restoration of autonomy! | | Rather Panel still silent | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Dec 20: Has Rather Panel failed Omar Abdullah? No say the political experts. According to them, the panel was constituted only to be used as an excuse for dropping the autonomy demand. This stands proved by the fact that NC has not talked about autonomy ever since the Panel was constituted. The timing of constituting the Panel also adds weight to the argument. The Panel was formed when New Delhi's had appointed its interlocutors. The interlocutors have submitted the report and the Panel is still considering justice Sageer's recommendations.
The Panel was directed to submit its report within three months. The panel has completed 13 months and the report is still awaited. The Panel became infructious the day Interlocutors submitted their report. If the panel submits it report now, will New Delhi prefer it to the recommendations of the interlocutors?
The preliminary report of the interlocutors deflated National Conference's autonomy balloon. No mention of restoration of autonomy was made by them. Shockingly when the Omar led government was supposed to register protest with New Delhi for causing miscarriage of Sageer's recommendations and the Rather Panel, he urged the separatists to meet the interlocutors.
Justice Sageer headed one of the working groups formed by the Prime Minister in 2006. Sageer's report was considered a victory by the National Conference although it made only a passing reference of autonomy.
In January last year, National Conference patron and union minister for New and Renewable Energy, Dr Farooq Abdullah said the Prime Minister will restore autonomy to Jammu Kashmir after consulting the representatives of all the regions of the state. Addressing media persons Dr Farooq said New Delhi was seriously considering implementation of Justice Sageer recommendations. "The Chief Minister has taken up the matter with Prime Minister and hopefully the PM will soon consult the representatives of Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir", he said.
The former Chief Minister's words are clear. According to him, Omar Abdullah has taken up the matter with the Prime Minister who will consider the recommendations after consulting the people of the state. The people of the state have been consulted by New Delhi's interlocutors. On the basis of their interaction with the people of the state, they submitted a report to the Union Home Minister.
If Chief Minister raised the matter with the Prime Minister as stated by Farooq Abdullah, why did he grant extension to Panel? Did he extend the time of the Panel to silence those interested in restoration of autonomy? |
