Taj Mohi-u-Din and Tara Chand at loggerheads, JMC officials, police in dilemma | Solid Waste dumping issue | | Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 20: The two vital ministries in the Omar Abdullah led coalition government are at loggerheads with each other as a result of which not only the people of Jammu are made to suffer but also the officials of the two departments find themselves at odd ends, invariably in a face off situation. On what started over a fortnight back merely over the issue of dumping waste and garbage in river Tawi, something which is suddenly being resisted by the PHE, Flood and Irrigation Minister Taj Mohi-u-Din ,putting the officials and authorities under Housing and Urban Development Ministry under Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand in a dilemma and in a piquant situation. While huge dumps of waste and garbage collected from the entire city is being dumped along Tawi beds and the practice is continuing for years, it has suddenly dawned upon the Flood Irrigation ministry this time being looked after by Congress minister from Kashmir Taj Mohi-u-Din that it is not acceptable and the Municipal authorities should find some alternative as dumping point. To the extent that Tawi or its bed should not be used for such purpose in terms of protecting it from pollution and maintaining its sanctity is understandable. But the manner issue has cropped up for some time has only created chaos and confusion within the JMC officials besides a furore in some areas which have been temporarily identified as places for garbage dumping points. JMC faced a tough resistance from some of these localities as people were up in arms against this move for apparent reasons. In fact people of the villages adjacent to Kot Bhalwal which has identified as site for dumping of solid waste staged loud protest demonstrations as a result of which the concerned ministry has been forced to announce that the government would look for alternate land for the purpose soon and grievances of the people would be removed. While the fresh assurance move from the Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand has come only few days back to pacify the public outcry, sources said the anger of the people coupled with problems being faced by the JMC officials has brought the war of nerves between the two ministries to a brink of further tension. Sources further said the approach and attitude of the Taj ministry in context of threatening the JMC employees of facing wrath and action by way of slapping FIR if they continued solid waste dumping at Tawi bed has also been taken as a 'high handedness' by the other ministry . Sources also said keen and rigid on its intent Police took some kind of cognizance following 'pressure' from Taj ministry against the JMC officials , something which has been taken very serious note of by the JMC authorizes and the concerned ministry. This move has added further strain in the ongoing war of nerves which Irrigation and Flood Control officials are trying to make a prestige point. One more negative dimension of the whole story is that Police officials are feeling the 'heat' from both the ministries and are in a state of dilemma which instructions to follow first. |
