Ministers-babus-cops nexus shielding land mafia: Slathia | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Dec 21: Jammu Bar Association president B.S.Slathia today accused senior Ministers, bureaucrats and even a large number of police officers of illegally occupying major chunks of State land and shielding the ‘land mafia’ in a big way. Senior lawyer and his associates, however, refused to identify in public the defaulters sitting at the helm. The lawyers made these accusations while marching on the streets of Jammu during the Jammu bandh. For over three weeks now the lawyers across J&K are agitating against the State Government’s move to transfer powers of land registrations from judicial officers to executive officers. Kashmir Bar Association had earlier observed a day-long strike on Monday in protest against the state government order. Demanding immediate rollback of the state government’s order, Slathia warned state government against siding with the land mafia. Slathia said, “The intention of the state government behind divesting judicial officers of land registrations is to gradually legalise ownership of land occupied illegally by Ministers, powerful bureaucrats and police officers in connivance with land mafia”. Meanwhile, normal life was paralyzed in and around areas of Jammu in response to the day-long bandh. The judges of the State high court even had to walk to their high court chambers as the protesting lawyers had locked the gates of the court premises while staging a dharna. Bar Association Jammu had received support from a large number of political, social and student bodies. The transport services remained off while schools and colleges also remained shut. Agitating lawyers took out small processions at a number of places and shouted slogans against the alliance Government.
