srinagar, Dec 21: Noted Kashmiri poet and social activist Naseem Shafaie has been chosen for the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for he poetic collection "Na Thsay Na Aks" (Neither shadow nor reflection). She is the first ever Kashmir woman writer to have been conferred with India's highest literary award.
The announcement of the annual awards for the outstanding literary works in different Indian languages was made by the Sahitya Akademi on Wednesday in New Delhi and Naseem was chosen for her excellence in the field of Kashmiri literature, i.e., poetry.
The Sahitya Akademi Award, considered to be the highest award in the field of literature, is given only once in lifetime.
In his communication to Naseem Shafaie, Agrahara Krishna Murthy, Secretary, Sahitya Akademi said that "the Executive Board of the Sahitya Akademi has, at its meeting held on Wednesday, 21 December 2011 at New Delhi, under the Chairmanship of its President, Sri Sunil Gangopadhyay selected your NA THSAY NA AKS (KASHMIRI) for its Annual Award for 2011." The Award presentation function will be held on 14 February 2012 at New Delhi, he said.
Incidentally, this is the second award for Naseem's poetic collection "Na Thsay Na Aks". In 2009, it was chosen for the first ever Tagore Award, jointly sponsored by the Sahitya Academy and Samsung Electronics in collaboration with the South Korean government.
"Na Thsay Na Aks" that was released in 2008 happens to be the second poetic collection of Naseem Shafaie. Her earlier poetic collection "Derche Machrith" (Open windows) was released in 1999.
Both her books have been acclaimed by literary circles in Kashmir and outside and many of her poems received commendation from the critiques. Many of her poems, including the ones that depict the suppressed atmosphere of turbulent Kashmir, have been translated into different languages including English, Urdu, Kanad, Tamil, Marathi and Telgu, to name few.
Born in 1952 in Srinagar to an educated middle class family, Naseem Shafai did her post graduation in Kashmiri language and literature from University of Kashmir. In 1984, she joined the higher education department of J&K Government and since then has been teaching Kashmiri language at graduation level.
As a student, Naseem made Kashmiri poetry as a medium of expressing her inner feelings. She started writing poetry on different subjects and soon carved out a distinct place for herself in Kashmiri literature. In December 1999, her first poetic collection "Derche Machrith" (Open Windows) was published and received literary acclaim in Kashmir. It was the first ever poetic collection of a Kashmiri woman writer in 20th century.
Na Tshay Na Akas, the awarded collection of poetry represents modern sensibility with a fresh breeze in poetic scene of Kashmir. Indeed, Naseem's poetic voice, her freshness of style, unique diction and extra ordinary presentation of thought are forces to reckon with. The canvas of her poetry is vast and it is capable to accommodate different shades of human philosophy.
Naseem's poetry reflects concerns and perspective of women living in conflict region. Her poem Akh aes paadshah baai, (once there was a queen) is about a Kashmiri mother who loses all her sons one by one. Waswaas (fear) depicts the apprehensions of young girls. Tchaandaw (search) is for those who lost their husbands and sons to enforced disappearances. Baaq (scream) is a cry of a women over sudden loss of her dear one to the conflict. "Through poetry you reflect what you see around. For months I tried to write about the killings and deaths but I couldn't. Then one day I was coming from Bemina to Lal Chowk and I saw seven funeral processions. When I reached home I put my anger on paper and wrote Baaq," Naseem says.
