Can BJP restore the ground it lost in Jammu?
Discarded Outfit

JAMMU, Dec 21: The Jammu & Kashmir unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is in a shambles. It has lost its sheen and the way and it is finding itself in a very difficult situation. It wants to extricate itself from this situation but finding it extremely difficult. The party has no agenda either for the state as a whole or for the Jammu province, which it considers its core constituency. The party has discarded that very ideology that had helped it win as many as 11 seats in 2008, the maximum number of seats the BJP ever won. It has frittered away all the gains and it has been treading a path which would further destroy this so-called ultra-nationalist and the so-called pro-Jammu province outfit.
The state unit of the BJP has the kind of leadership no one recognizes. The bulk of people do not know who are running the party affairs and manning party positions or who is leading the party in the state. Most of the people do not even know the names of the party president, party vice-presidents and party general secretaries.
The BJP is facing several other problems. For example, seven of the eleven BJP MLAs stand expelled from the party for their “anti-party activities”, as also for the cross-voting in the legislative council elections, held on April 13, 2010. These disqualified MLAs are working day and night to avenge their disqualification and they want to avenge it by destroying their parent organization. It is a different story that they themselves are at the receiving end. People do not have much faith in the remaining four MLAs. The fact is that they believe that “two of the four MLAs are actually the NC men in the BJP”, as they believe that “ PHE Minister Taj Mhi-ud-Din is the NC man in the Congress party”. As for the remaining two MLAs, less said the better. They have never made their presence felt even once during all these three years of their election, except on a few occasions. This means the party is virtually leaderless.
The BJP leadership held a two-day-long meeting to discuss ways and means calculated to rejuvenate the party. A couple of central BJP leaders also participated in the deliberations. The main highlights of the meeting were: (1) Undertake activities to not allow other political parties to capture its political space, (2) work as one man to face and overcome all challenges and strengthen the party at the grass-roots level, (3) hold more such meetings and work out an effective strategy to strengthen itself in all the 37 assembly constituencies in Jammu province as well as all the municipal wards in the province, (4) fixation of accountability on the local BJP leadership in case of its poor performance or no performance, (4) identification with the people and the issues facing them and take up the same vigorously and (6) the possibility of reentry of the expelled MLAs in the event of tendering an apology for cross-voting. Fair enough.
But the problem of the local BJP, as mentioned, is that the party doesn’t have inspiring leadership. The fact of the matter is that the people of the province by and large have discarded this party. If the central BJP leadership really wishes to strength its unit in the Jammu province it has no other alternative but to revamp the whole organization by inducting new and acceptable faces, who are articulate, committed, public-spirited and who know what exactly the Kashmir problem means. But, again, the problem is that there is hardly any public-spirited person who is prepared to join this party, which has over the period become a den of intrigues and in which three highly “opportunist” and “over-ambitious leaders” reign supreme. Everyone knows the names of these three so-called senior BJP leaders. They are the BJP and the BJP is they, with the general public hating them from the core of their heart. The point is that the central BJP leadership will have to work very hard to reactivate the party in the most crucial and strategic Jammu province, the backbone of the Indian nation and the Indian State.
