J&K Govt mulls for funds for fire safety devices in hospitals | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, Dec 22: Following AMRI Hospital fire in Kolkotta, the sources said that state Government has decided to earmark separate funds, during the ensuing budget session of the state legislature, for upgrading the fire safety mechanism in medical colleges and state and district hospitals and for creating fire safety measures major and minor hospitals in Jammu and Kashmir which were found lacking basic fire safety system. Official sources said that the Minster for Medical Education, R S Chib, and the Health Minister, Sham Lal Sharma, have taken cognizance of the recent safety audit of all the hospitals which has revealed that almost all the major and minor hospitals, including nursing homes and health centres lack even the basic fire safety devices. Sources said that the Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, had asked the state Home Department to have an audit done on assessing the fire safety mechanism in various hospitals in the state. The audit was carried out after a major blaze in the Advanced Medicare Research Institute (AMRI) in Kolkata in which 91 people were killed. Both Sharma and Chib are likely to have a session with the Finance Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather, where a request would be made for earmarking separate funds for upgrading fire safety devices in all major and minor hospitals in the state. “The Government has decided in principle to issue guidelines and directions to all the private nursing homes and hospitals, including two medical colleges run in private sector to install fire safety devices failing which their licenses and registration would be canceled, sources added. Sources said that the state Government may seek financial assistance from the centre for upgrading fire safety devices and for installing the same in the Government run hospitals, health centres and dispensaries at the district and tehsil levels.
