JAMMU, DECEMBER 22- Minister for Health, Horticulture & Floriculture, Mr. Sham Lal Sharma has sought the support and cooperation of cross section of the society in preventive campaign against the AIDS.
Addressing one-day AIDS awareness camp, organized by the Helping Hand Society, in collaboration with J&K AIDS Control Society at Transport Nagar, here today, the Minister said that AIDS is a self created disease and it can be prevented with effective precautions. He urged upon the religious, social organizations, NGOs and educational institutions to make collective efforts to educate the masses about the preventive measures to save the future generations from dreaded disease.
Appreciating the efforts of Helping Hand Society for organizing the awareness camp, especially for the drivers and conductors considered as high risk group, he said that such efforts are required from others as well. He asked the AIDS Control Society to step up its efforts and organize more such camps at the district levels with the active involvement of schools and colleges. He directed for focusing on the most vulnerable sections like adolescents, drivers, armed forces and other neglected and innocent classes.
Expressing satisfaction over the achievements of the AIDS Control Society and other organizations in keeping a check on the disease, the Minister said that figures available with the Government are indicators towards decline, but we have to make continuous efforts to make Jammu and Kashmir an AIDS free zone. He called for re-activating the AIDS Counseling Centers for HIV positive patients so that they get the proper guidance. He stressed the need for extending helping hand to the HIV victims for their proper rehabilitation and treatment. They need sympathy and support of the society to live a dignified life, he added.
Responding to the demand of the Trucks, Tankers Unions, the Minister assured that a First Referral Unit will be established at Transport Nagar for the convenience of drivers, conductors and other workers. He also issued instructions to the Director Health, Jammu to depute senior consultants twice in a month to examine the patients in the area.
On the occasion, the AIDS Control Society and Department of Indian System of Medicines distributed printed material, condoms and medicines amongst the drivers, conductors and other people. They also provided on-spot-counselling to the people about the symptoms of AIDS and its prevention.
Many other speakers also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the causes of AIDS and preventive measures.
Among those present on the occasion included, Director Indian System of Medicines, Dr. Abdul Kabir, Controller, Drugs & Food Control Organization Mr. Satish Gupta, Project Director, AIDS Control Society, Dr. Rakesh Khajuria, Director Health Services, Dr. Madhu Khullar, Director Family Welfare, Dr. T.K. Moza, former HoD Blood Transfusion Department, Dr. T. R. Raina, President Trucks Union, S. Manmohan Singh and large number of doctors, Members of truck and tanker unions and drivers, conductors.
