As fog makes visibility poor, forces approach border dwellers to be their "eyes and ears" | | | Bharat Bhushan suchetgarh on ib (jammu), Dec 22: As fog has started making visibility poor here and in other border areas of the region, forces have approached border dwellers to work as their "eyes and ears" in detecting infiltration bids, if any. Several border residents had given their consent to work for free out of sheer patriotism, an army officer said and added that their job would be to keep an eye on the infiltration routes that passed through their villages. They would be required to contact border troops, or police in case they picked up the movement of suspected persons in fields, or close to their villages, he said. The officer said those living in border villages could be of a great help to troops in detecting infiltrations from across the borders. "Since people work in their fields and happen to visit close to the border to collect fodder for cattle, they can tell troops in advance about any suspicious movement," he added. The 16 Pak militants, who had entered India from Jogwan in Akhnoor some time back, were also first seen by villagers who were going to fields to cut grass for cattle in the wee hours. The officer said the group was later eliminated by troops on the basis of the information provided by the villagers. "If they are encouraged and their identity is kept a secret, people will work voluntarily for counter-insurgency forces and can really prove to be their eyes and ears," he asserted. He said the villagers, who provided valuable information, were likely to be rewarded suitably. He said adequate number of troops had been deployed on the borders with Pakistan as intelligence inputs suggested that militants could make intrusion bids during these days when fog had already started enveloping the area. When the fog is dense, visibility drops to as low as three metres. Taking benefit of these weather conditions, the Pak-based militants make maximum infiltration bids during these days. The officer said the sleuths of intelligence agencies had also fanned out in the border areas. |
