Pollution level alarming in Sacred Devika river | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Udhampur, Dec 22: Udhampur’s most sacred Devika river’s water is becoming unfit for day today use because of high sewage contamination. The pollution in Devika river has increased at an alarming level and water is presently not fit to drink and bath. According to environmentalist working on the project assigned by state government to ascertain pollution level in Devika and Tawi rivers the level of coliform bacteria in river water is much higher than the accepted safety standards and added that people are using and bathing with highly toxic water which is dangerous for them. He also added that even ground water quality in river and traditional Bowlis (ponds) on the bank of river has been affected with respect to total dissolved solids (TDS) and there is high level of inorganic and organic pollution in it. Pertinent to mention that the rising pollution level in the Devika river in Udhampur town having tremendous religious sanctity, is causing great concern among all the citizens of Udhampur as majority of them often visit at its banks to cleanse themselves of their sins and offer prayers. According to Manju Gupta State Executive member of BJP and noted social worker said that most of the river's pollution is due to the careless disposal garbage and sewage directly into the river, all the way from Housing colony to Omarah Morh. She added that cold and callous approach of district administration and the J&K Pollution Control Board too has failed to protect the river from turning into a dumping ground. Despite direction of J&K high court regarding encroachment and pollution in river administration failed to take any concrete steps to save the river. Social worker Anil Paba who had earlier filed PIL in state High Court for the savior of the river devika alleged that two times a pipeline was installed from TB Hospital Udhampur to Devika river to keep the river clean but the said project too has utterly failed due to mismanagement and wrong planning but resulted into huge loss to state exchequer.
