BAJ ups the ante, to gehrao Cong ministers | Avoiding Confrontation | | Neha JAMMU, Dec 22: The December 20 massive bandh across Jammu province should have moved the authorities in the state in order to break the registration powers logjam and help the courts resume normal functioning in the larger public interest. It was not an ordinary bandh. It was a bandh of its own kind with all the people willingly contributing to the success of this bandh, organized at the behest of the Bar Association Jammu (BAJ) and supported by all the organizations, barring the NC and others of their ilk, who have no support-base in Jammu province. The Jammu bandh was, in fact, a verdict against the decision of the government to transfer powers of registration from the designated courts to the revenue depart, which is ill-equipped and ill-trained to take up the new assignment. It was a referendum of sort on the controversial decision. That the bandh has failed to move the insensitive authorities is clear from the fact that they have not taken any initiative to engage with the striking lawyers to resolve the issue amicably taking into consideration the mood of the people of Jammu province, plus the opposition in Kashmir by the legal fraternity to the order under attack. The utter failure of the authorities to take note of and respect the sentiments of the people has forced the striking lawyers to extend the strike till December 26. This is not important. The lawyers have now reached a point of no return. There is no doubt that BAJ leadership would continue the strike till the time the order is not rescinded. The BAJ leadership knows how to achieve their stated objective. It is committed to the people's cause and it would surely come out with flying colours as in the past. The history of the BAJ is the history of successes and not failure. No one doubts the capacity of the BAJ and the community of lawyers. What is important to note is the charges the BAJ leadership yesterday leveled against certain politicians in and out of the government, certain bureaucrats and certain police official, as also its decision to gehrao the Jammu-based ministers, especially the Congress ministers against whom they have already unleashed a no-holds-barred campaign saying "they are responsible for what the state government did to promote corruption in the revenue department" and "help the land grabbers and land mafia to get their irregular and illegal land transactions regular and legalized". The charges leveled and the decision taken by the BAJ leadership to force the authorities to withdraw the highly despised decision clearly suggest that the logjam on the issue is likely to snowball into a major confrontation between the lawyers/people and the government in general and the Jammu-based Congress ministers in particular. The BAJ leadership just cannot be held responsible for the developing situation. It has during the past several days met a number of ministers, including Revenue Minister Raman Bhalla, and the concerned bureaucrats to apprise them of the difficulties arising out of the government decision. Even yesterday, the BAJ leadership suggested that it is for meaningful and result-oriented discussions with the government. It is basically the hard and negative attitude of the authorities that is responsible for the deadlock. This approach will not work. The impending full-scale confrontation between the lawyers/people and the government can still be averted provided the Jammu-based Congress ministers are prepared to read the writing on the wall. In fact, they are left with no other option but to recognize the signs of the time and tell the NC leadership that they could not go with it as the issue is adversely impacting them and the Congress party. The Jammu-based Congress ministers must act before it is too late. Time is running out. The patience of the people of Jammu is ending very fast. The Congress ministers should not allow the situation to take an ugly turn. For, they are the immediate targets of the striking lawyers and the general public. |
