| Cong under severe attack | | Angry Jammu | | Rustam
JAMMU, Dec 22: The people of Jammu province are unhappy with Congress. The anger against the party is growing by the day. There are potent reasons for the people of Jammu province to criticize the Congress and the Congress ministers. It is hardly necessary to catalogue here all the reasons responsible for the people's fast-growing anger against the Congress. A reference here to just three recent instances would be enough to put things in perspective and show what has led to the estrangement between the people of Jammu and the Congress ministers.
One, not-so-long-ago the Congress leader and Revenue Minister Raman Bhalla took an appropriate decision under which those desirous of joining the central paramilitary forces, including the CRPF, were to get Dogra certificate from the designated revenue officials. The decision was opposed by the Kashmiri extremists as well as the so-called mainstream Kashmiri leaders, including those belonging to the ruling NC. Even though the concrened minister's intentions were sincere but the party did not support nor stood by him when it came to asserting in front of NC opposition. stated that he would not withdraw the order come what may. Unfortunately, he went back on his assurance and the order was withdrawn much against the wishes of the people of Jammu province.
Two, only the other day, Union Minister Jairam Ramesh, Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister Rangarajan, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, Law Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar and a large number of state and central government officials gathered at the Kashmir University to distribute 1,060 appointment letters to the Kashmiri youth. No Congress minister took on the Chief Minister and the Union Minister for the rigorous exclusion of the Jammu youth from the package, the so-called Project Himayat. It was an extreme form of discrimination with the Jammu youth who have been facing acute unemployment problem because of the Kashmir-centric policies of the state government, led by the Valley-based NC. The Jammu youth, or for that matter, the people of Jammu province, have taken a serious exception to the this act of gross discrimination and they are eagerly waiting for an opportunity to teach the Congress ministers hailing from Jammu a lesson.
And, three, in November, the state government suddenly took a decision to do away with the age-old practice of registration of documents by the courts and empower the revenue officials to exercise these powers - decision that has put the people of Jammu province and the community of lawyers on collision course. The Congress ministers should have opposed the move as it was fraught with grave evils, including promotion of corruption in the already exceptionally corrupt state, but they did not do that. They put their signature on the decision, thus once again vindicating those in Jammu province who consider the Jammu-based Congress ministers as the "agents" of the Kashmiri leadership.
The prevailing anger in Jammu province against the Congress party and need to be viewed in this context. It is difficult to say if these Congress ministers would change their attitude towards the people of Jammu province because they are as they are. It doesn't augur well for them as well as Jammu province. |
