Congress of contradictions
Lawyers' Strike
12/24/2011 12:03:42 AM
Neha
jammu, Dec 23: Something is patently wrong with the Congress party in Jammu and Kashmir. Its leaders are singing one song and its ministers singing another tune and doing exactly the opposite. The case in point is the ongoing fierce controversy over the NC-Congress coalition government's unanimous decision on the transfer of registration powers from the courts to the revenue officials. Another case in point is the positive attitude of certain Congress leaders to the ongoing lawyers' strike. The strike has evoked tremendous response from the people of Jammu province for various reasons, including their realization that they would be the worst sufferers in case the judiciary is divested of registration powers. It is their fear that the transfer of registration powers to the revenue officials would not only promote corruption but would also cause inordinate delays as far as registration of documents is concerned. The fear is genuine considering the manner in which the revenue officials function, operate and behave.
As said, the Congress ministers have willingly and happily become a party to the cabinet decision on transfer of registration. None of the Congress ministers has even once during all these 28 days of strike spoken a word against the decision which is being bitterly opposed by one and all in Jammu province. In fact one of the Congress ministers few days back made a common cause and supported the views of NC minister over the issue. The other two participants were the BAJ president B S Slathia and a senior lawyer Sham Sunder Anand Lehar, who had virtually cornered both the ministers by advancing highly convincing arguments. The unflinching support of the Congress ministers to the roundly condemned decision constitutes one part of the story and it is a sad reflection on them.
The other part of the story appears quite amusing and questionable in the sense that a number of senior Congress leaders have criticized the government decision and expressed their solidarity with the striking lawyers. What is all this? They are part of the government. It is their party which is sharing power with the NC. It is the NC-Congress coalition government that is ruling the roost in the state. They cannot absolve themselves from the responsibility.
The concerned people have, instead of appreciating these Congress leaders, accused them of "hoodwinking the people of Jammu province by pretending that they are with the striking lawyers". They say, "they are not" and that "they are simply seeking to address their respective constituencies without doing anything on the ground". They are also saying that "had they candidly told the Congress high command that they considered the decision anti-people and as a deliberate onslaught of the executive on the judiciary and demanded its rollback, they would have surely won over the people of Jammu province". "Since they have indulged in a mere lip service, the people have simply pooh-poohed their canny and motivated support to the striking lawyers," they are saying this as well.
What does all this show? It shows that it is a Congress of contradictions. It's no wonder then that the people are jeering at it, condemning the Congress party and denouncing the Congress ministers as "Jammu ke Gadar", "Jammu ke Dalal", "Jammu ke Jai Chand"......The Congress leadership and ministers should speak in one voice so that the confusion created by the contradictory stands taken by the ministers and certain senior leaders is cleared.
