Barriers, night ambushes laid on 21 new infiltration routes, traditional routes | Troops ready to foil intrusion bids during foggy days | | Bharat Bhushan suchetgarh on ib (jammu), Dec 23: To foil intrusion bids by militants from across the borders during foggy days, that have already set in, troops here have erected additional barriers and laid night ambushes on the 21 newly identified routes and the old routes. Additional forces were deployed on all these routes in Jammu and Kashmir, a senior army officer said. The identification of 21 new infiltration routes involved a hectic drill undertaken by counter-insurgency (CI) agencies with the help of border dwellers and troops, he informed. The survey in this regard was carried out by the agencies some time back on the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB) in the eight border districts of Kathua, Samba, Jammu, Rajouri, Poonch, Baramulla, Bandipora and Kupwara. The officer said the plugging of new and old routes was done by troops in a very strategic manner to minimise the chances of infiltration. The new strategy was designed in a way that infiltrators were likely to walk into the cordons of forces and get killed, he added. Apart from the cordons, additional barriers were also erected and night ambushes laid on all these routes. The barriers were set up for the purpose of checking vehicles and frisking pedestrians, the officer said. "During these days, militants mainly take cover of thick fog, besides using dry nullahs and zero populated areas to infiltrate," he added. Some of the newly identified routes passed through Pathri Gali, Sobra Gali, Fugwari and Bachoo in Poonch, Panjtali belt and Gagrian in Jammu, Baber in Samba and Bain nullah in Kathua. These routes had been put under three-tier security. The known infiltration routes here passed through Kanhachak, Vijaypur, Sapwal and Ghati. Security on these routes was also tightened. The officer said extra security arrangements made on the borders would continue till the Republic Day, which is celebrated on January 26 every year, was over. Quoting reports gathered by intelligence agencies, he said there were at least 25 militant training camps -- 21 along LoC and four along IB -- in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK). In these camps, hundreds of militants were being trained in the handling of weapons. After their training was over, they were to be pushed into Jammu and Kashmir to give impetus to the waning militancy here. The management of these camps was under the direct control of the Pak ISI, he added. He said there were reports of the presence of 300 militants in Goi-Kahuta-Chirat belt, over 1,000 in Kotli-Sensa belt, 400 at Mirpur-Bindi, 260-265 in Samani-Kudiali-Garnum belt and 450 in Sailkote-Zafarwala belt. Troops were, however, ready to foil any infiltration bid by militants, he asserted. |
