After forces, police too put border posts on alert to tackle infiltration; VDCs activated, villagers do night patrolling | | | Bharat Bhushan JAMMU, Dec 24: After security forces, police too have put on high alert their border posts in the region as intelligence inputs suggested that infiltration bids by militants are likely to go up with the fog getting thicker in days to come. Village defence committees (VDCs) too had been activated, and at some places, it were the villagers who had been engaged for night patrolling. This time of the year is very crucial on borders. Taking advantage of foggy weather conditions, when visibility is very poor and drops to three metres, or so, militants make repeated attempts to infiltrate. A police officer said while troops were already there on the first line of defence, police border posts had also been instructed to maintain round-the-clock vigil. "We have alerted our border posts and plugged hinterland infiltration routes to eliminate militants in case they infiltrate", he added. "Not only this, our border posts have also been given instructions to gather actionable intelligence about infiltration and movement of militants for surgical strikes," the officer said. Intelligence persons had also been deployed along the border with Pakistan to collect advance and target oriented inputs on infiltration, he informed. To detect any infiltration, border residents' help was must, he asserted. Four years, or so back, a youth of Bazigar tribe had apprehended two militants and handed them over to police in Kanhachak sub-sector here. It was only because of his alertness that the militants were apprehended before they could leave the area to the place of their hiding. They carried two cricket bats with them. In the specially carved out cavities in the blades of the two bats, Indian currency notes and handgrenades were hidden. The officer said police success in detecting infiltrations mainly depended on their vast network of local contacts. He said apart from alerting border posts, police had also approached border residents and asked them to contact them in case they picked up the movement of suspicious persons in their area. In the city and its peripheral areas also, police had stepped up vigil and intensified checking of vehicles entering the capital city from the border areas and militancy-infested parts of the region. SSP, Kathua, J L Sharma said there were seven border posts under him and all had been alerted. The security had been further stepped up in all the border areas of Kathua, he added. Sharma said VDCs were also activated and at some places, people were engaged in "thekri pehra" (night patrolling). He said all vehicles coming from Kathua borders to the main towns were being checked by cops daily early in the morning at specially erected nakas. Security was also strengthened in the border areas of Jammu, Samba, Rajouri and Poonch. Xxxxxxxxxxxxx |
