NC again ignored Congress | Lawyers' Strike | | Neha JAMMU, Dec 24: The striking lawyers yesterday met with JKPCC president and chairman of the Congress-NC Coordination Committee Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz and sought his intervention so that the ongoing controversy over the state government's decision to transfer registration powers from judiciary to revenue officials is amicably resolved and the courts resume normal functioning. The lawyers' delegation was led by the BAJ president B S Slathia under whose leadership the legal fraternity engineered movement against the official decision, which was taken so suddenly. It was a very positive interaction between Prof Soz and the BAJ leadership. The JKPCC president assured the BAJ delegation that he would "sort out the issue by tomorrow as per the aspirations of the BAJ and those of the common masses". It was indeed a great gesture. Even far more significant perhaps was the Prof Soz's suggestion that "as a common person I am against the idea of transferring registration powers from judiciary to revenue officials". To be more exact, Prof Soz shared the views of the striking lawyers and reassured them that he would intervene and get the issue resolved without any delay. This is the way to resolve sticking points and end logjams. One can say with confidence that Prof Soz would do what is required to be done in the larger public interest and make the government recognize the mood of the people and withdraw the controversial decision that put the lawyers/people of Jammu province on the road to confrontation, as also made the striking lawyers to launch a scathing attack on some ministers. It became quite evident from the nature of discussion between Prof Soz and the BAJ delegation that Omar Abdullah-led government had taken the controversial decision without taking into confidence the Congress party. In other words, Omar Abdullah and his men in the council of ministers unilaterally decided to bring the issue in the cabinet meeting to obtain the concurrence of the Congress ministers. Had Omar Abdullah who also happens to be a member of the Congress-NC Coordination Committee, discussed the issue with Prof Soz, things today would have been totally different, there would have been no strike at all and the litigants or those seeking justice would not have suffered. The Chief Minister surely took the Congress President for a ride and once again demonstrated their arrogance and disrespect to the coalition dharma. It is an entirely different story that the Congress ministers okayed the NC's move without applying their mind overlooking the consequences their senseless cooperation with the NC leadership would lead to, especially in Jammu province. It was not for the first time that the NC, which is ruling the state in collaboration with the Congress party, took the Congress leadership for a ride, and sought to impose its will on the people. It has been doing so ever since January 5, 2009, when it got the state power on a platter. The latest gesture/stand of Prof Soz must make the NC leadership behave and take the Congress leadership into confidence before taking any decision whatever. As for the Congress party, it must see to it that the Congress-NC Coordination Committee meets at regular intervals to discuss the issues of public import so that the people come to know that the coalition partners are working in unison and in the best interest of the general public. To be more exact, the chairman of the Coordination Committee must apply the brake from time to time to keep the NC leadership under control. |
