Early Times Report
srinagar, Dec 24: An activist of the ruling National Conference (NC) was shot dead by militants in Jammu and Kashmir's summer capital Srinagar during the wee hours on Saturday.
Unidentified gun men on Saturday morning appeared in the Batamaloo area of Srinagar and fired upon Bashir Ahmed Bhat from close range.
Militants after striking successfully managed to escape from the spot, said local media.
Bhat, according to eye witnesses, died on spot. However, he was rushed to SMHS hospital where he was declared dead.
According to reports, Bhat's father had also become a prey of the bullets of militants some 15 years ago.
In 1996, Bhat's father Muhammad Jamal Bhat, a block president of the Nation Conference, was killed by separatist guerrillas in the same area.
While talking to a top police official said that during the wee hours unidentified gun men managed to strike at Batamaloo area and killed the National Conference activist in cold blood.
"Soon after this incident the Jammu and Kashmir Police called a high level meeting which was presided by the Inspector General of Police, Shiv Murari Sahai," he said.
The Minister of State for Home, Nasir Aslam Wani, while talking to IBNS, said that militancy is at its lowest ebb in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
"Stray incidents do occur and it does not mean that there is militancy in Srinagar. I assure you there is no militancy in Srinagar."
He said that he is collecting details about this unfortunate incident. "Police has started investigation and the culprits will face the music."
Pertinently, Jammu and Kashmir Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ali Muhammad Sagar escaped a bid on his life when unidentified gunmen attacked him in Srinagar last weak. One of the minister's security guards was killed in the attack.
Before the attack on the Minister, a sarpanch Abdul Salam was shot at and injured by unidentified gunmen in south Kashmir district of Pulwama
