Citizens’ Forum, Railway Authorities meet to discuss problems

Jammu, Dec 26: In pursuant to the directions issued by the High Court of J&K vide WPPIL-No.2/2011 CMP No. 16/2011 dated 17.12.2011 in the PIL case ‘Citizens Forum and others Vs U.O.I. and others’ directing Divisional Railways Manager stationed at Firozepur to arrange for a meeting on 24.12.2011 at Jammu Railway Station premises to discuss the redressal of grievances of the railway users as put forth by Citizens Forum in their PIL.
The Divisional Traffic Manager, Jammu was directed to coordinate the meeting.
The meeting was attended by IGP Railways, SSP railways, Vice Chairperson JDA, Administrator Municipal Corporation, Divisional Engineer Railways and representative of Divisional Commissioner Jammu.
The Citizen’s Forum was represented by its President R K Chadha, Vikram Gour and Arun Sharma.
The railways were represented by a team of officials of railways headed by Divisional Railways Manager, Firozepur. Senior counsel S S Lehar and P S Chandel, Central Govt.’s standing counsel also attended the meeting.
Citizens Forum highlighted several problems being faced by the passengers including stoppage of vehicles carrying passengers up to the entrance gate of the railway station, parking of vehicles, provision escalators, lifts, ramps, wheeled trolleys and wheel chairs for sick and disabled.
To reduce the rush of passengers on the existing entrance it is proposed to open a second entrance on the eastern side of the railway station with the addition of at least three more platforms.
It is proposed to create more space on platform No. 1 to accommodate heavy rush of passengers, the removed benches for passengers comfort need to be provided with better and comfortable sitting arrangement.
It is also proposed that to reduce the congestion within the railway complex parking of SRTC buses be stopped immediately.
Shabby and unhygienic Dhabas and eating joints within the railway complex should be removed and instead a more modern building with eating space on the ground floor and rest rooms on the first floor be constructed.
